The First Epistle to the Corinthians, Revised Edition (New International Commentary on the New Testament (NICNT))

Deep dive into the Corinthian crisis
This is probably the most scholarly treatment of any commentary of biblical literature I’ve attempted. As a student of the word with no Greek background , I knew I might be climbing a mountain too high . I have often asked God to open my eyes to behold wondrous things out of his ‘law’. This treatment of I Corinthians afforded grand vistas .Dr. Fee’s treatment of the text, his extensive footnotes , his grasp on the nuances of the structure of the original language , the pitfalls of various translations, his critique of modern scholarship, allowing extensive footnotes of such; all contributed to a sense the seminary class was in session; so listen up!I am cajoling myself for my long held views on this epistle and thanking God for Dr. Fee’s dedication to his call. I absolutely agree with Dr. Fee’s treatment on the issues dealt with in this epistle by the great Apostle Paul who was glad he ‘spoke in tongues more than ye all’, but would gladly speak in a known language in public to edify the church. Who would rather be thought of as a weak unimpressive speaker, and yet demonstrate the power of God through the preaching of the crucified messiah. Who wouldn’t mind eating meat sacrificed to idols, but would not allow his liberty to destroy another one’s faith. 11 corrections in all Paul had to deal deftly with in this church.Honestly by the end of this book I was exhausted and actually wept, that Paul was so mishandled , so disrespected by many in this church .It’s no different today , so many unloving, critical tares in the church, unable to say, ‘ blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’. A great work here , but beware it will shine a light on your sinfulness and force you to repent from your pride.

Wonderful study aid!
As one who has spent 35 years buying and using commentaries I can attest to the fact that quality and usefulness varies widely to say the least. I can also agree with the other reviewers here and say without a doubt that this treatment of I Corinthians by Fee is in the top tier of commentaries by any author on any book of the Bible. Not as technical as Thiselton, but a thoroughly scholarly work based on the Greek text (even though the NIV is the translation quoted throughout.) Most of the technical info is in the footnotes, so some understanding of NT Greek is helpful when utilizing those, but not at all necessary to glean wonderful truths from this amazing letter. The format has an intro/summary and translation (NIV) for each section followed by a verse-by-verse commentary of that section. Footnotes appear at the bottom of most every page, from a single reference note on some to a half page worth on others. The content is rich.A masterful balance of technical helps and spiritual insight, this volume is a joy to use. The lay-flat binding and acid free paper just add to that experience for me. Fee has hit a home run with this commentary, and believers everywhere are the beneficiaries.

Very detailed, but often disagreed
This handles issues in much greater detail than the other scholarly commentaries I have on 1 Cor. On easier issues, that makes for more reading than necessary. But on harder issues, it can be helpful. I found his language to be a little more complex than other commentaries. On less controversial issues, I found this commentary to be really helpful. But on some of the controversial issues, I not only didn't agree with Fee, but the other commentators I was reading often used Fee as the example of minority positions they didn't agree with. He does give extensive argumentation, based on his exegesis, for why he doesn't believe the traditional/widely-held views are not right; so you can evaluate yourself. Toward the later half of the commentary I was finding myself disagreeing with his exegesis and conclusions often enough that I usually didn't even look at his this commentary; I depended on others as my first and second, and only went to Fee if I really needed another voice.

Very readable, but......
Now that I'm well into this commentary, a few words. I only know of Dr. Fee through others. On the whole, he does an admirable job of explaining a letter of Paul that can be daunting at best. If you can get past the lengthy footnotes, you might enjoy his take on this letter. The footnotes are endless and tend to interrupt the flow of thought. But, what caught me up was his use of the NIV (2011) as his main text. A text that is more thought for thought then it is literal. For a biblical scholar to use such a text seems to downgrade his authority on the matter. He also does not like the ESV very well. A translation (As his footnotes make abundantly clear) regarded by many as one of the most accurate on the market. But, all that aside, the commentary is well done and understandable. It's a big book, so be prepared to spend a great deal of time with this. It's worth it!!
