reliable brand, good value for money...
There is not much to say about this external hard drive. I bought it for using as a Time machine backup device in my macbook pro. For that purpose it works okay. I needed to reformat it for mac for that purpose but before that I tried it on my pc and it is ready to go with no need for reformatting or setting up The USB 3.0 capability is a plus (but it is also backward compatible with USB2.0 as well). I have seen a data transfer rate of upto 80.6 mb/sec and an average of 70-75mb/sec while transferring a 2.2gb video file into the drive. When I transferred the same file from the drive back to my laptop the maximum transfer rate was 101mb/sec and the average was 80-90mb/sec. Of course these values depend on the file as well but I measured similar values with different files so I can say it is consistently fast.. It comes with an approximately 18.5 inches long transfer cable and through this cable it transfers both data and power. Other than that it does not offer a case or anything else. The device has limited warranty but, to me it is very difficult to make a warranty claim for an external hard drive since the warranty only covers none user mediated errors and most drives do fail either due to dropping or not safely removing neither of which are covered by this limited warranty. However, This hard drive is UL certified and that is a plus in terms of electrical safety (yet it does not guarantee it won't ever fail). WD is a reliable brand in external hard drive market and in addition to this 1gb WD element, I also have a WD passport ultra which I use for backing up my PC. The main difference between these two exactly same size (3.2 X 4.3X 0.5 inches) devices is that the ultra comes with the full version of the WDsmartware software which automatically backs up the PC when the device is connected. This cheaper model has only the trial version of that software but honestly, if you are buying it for mac's you don't ever need it anyways (time machine does the same thing for free). Currently (april 2015) this is one of the cheapest (among well known brands) 1tb device in amazon market place so I can easily recommend this as a backup drive to whoever is looking for one...

Reliable and lots of room for backups
I work out of my home, so my home computer is my business computer. As such, it is vital that I do not lose any of the data on my PC. I have been using an external hard drive to back up my PC for about a decade. My previous external hard drive for this purpose was a 60 GB Western Digital drive. I had about 30 GB of "archived" data on it and would backup about 3 GB of data that might be changed each month. So it had plenty of room for all of my data, but I had to regularly delete older monthly backups to make room for newer ones. That was a pain, and it meant I only had backups going back a few months. That proved to be a problem recently when I noticed I had inadvertently deleted an old article off of one of my Web sites. I checked in my monthly backups and still couldn't find it. But fortunately I had been in the practice of "archiving" the last monthly backup whenever I had gotten a new computer. I had to go way back to an archive from when I had done so in 2006, but I found the file. But that told me that keeping old backups was a smart idea. Then shortly after that, after a decade of use, my 60 GB WD drive was freezing up when I was trying to make my monthly backup. So I figured it was time for a new drive. Since my previous Western Digital drive had lasted a decade, I figured I'd get another one. I was really surprised when I checked Amazon and saw I could get a 1TB drive for about the same price I paid for my 60 GB drive a decade ago. So I ordered it. I got it two days later (Amazon Prime). I plugged it in; it took a few seconds to load the driver, and then it worked. No problems whatsoever. I backed up all of my archived data and did my monthly backup in less than an hour. I have done one additional monthly backup since then, and I backed up my data in about 20 minutes. I now have all of 35 GB of data on a drive that started with 930 GB of free space. So I should be able to keep doing my monthly backups for many years to come without having to delete older backups. There is security in knowing my vital data is protected and in knowing I will always have very old backups if the need should arrive for such. So I am giving this drive five stars, with the stipulation that I am assuming it will last as long as my old WD drive did.

This gem comes in a beautiful black safety box
This gem comes in a beautiful black safety box. (Probably the same stuff that makes up the black box in an airplane from my person experiments, which have included dropping it from a balcony, burying it in the snow, and being sat on by my dog. All of this was "accidental," of course. Oh, and I even saw it flying through the house at one point to find itself in physical contest with a wall - the wall won and though this WD portable HD succumbed to the influence of gravity, when I retrieved it from the dining room floor I noticed it was unharmed!) Anyway, this product features a whopping 1TB of information capacity (which is double most of those lesser models that can only hold 500GB). What a steal! In addition to that WD went above and beyond by including a USB 3.0 connection, rather than the shoddy 2.0 which is slower than AOL on dial-up (for those of you who can recall). I have loaded it with mounds of information (near 1 whole TB!!!) and it continues to recall every piece of information exactly as I would expect. I give it an A+ for it's eidetic memory, for it has yet to fail recalling every line of multiple tv shows and movies, flawlessly. (Seriously, and you thought Sheldon Cooper was a know-it-all). It also has remembered my homework, multiple images, and even information for work, which would have no doubt otherwise been neglected due to my laziness as a human. This is definitely the next step in aiding humans with memory problems and I am positive that once the logistics have been worked out one of these devices will be implanted into every human being who wishes to become a WD-branded cyborg. Way to make a great product!

we found that the operating temperature is excellent, file transfer rate is excellent and the 5400 ...
Upon purchase of the WD 1 TB WD Elements Portable USB 3.0 Hard Drive, we were really impressed with this hard drive. After working with this WD Hard Drive, we found that the operating temperature is excellent, file transfer rate is excellent and the 5400 rpm hard drive is compatible with a 7200 rpm hard drive regarding the refresh rate. The same amount of time (speed) was recorded in using 7200, and 5400 rpm. This unit is extremely quiet, more so than the Seagate Go Flex which we have, and the WD Elements runs cooler. After ten hours of use in transferring around 456 GB, the unit proved to be a very stable external hard drive. The WD Elements quickly recognized the drive upon initial plug-in. We are operating Windows 7, 64 bit and there were no issues whatsoever. In fact, we believe that the WD elements is a little quicker than Seagate Go Flex, runs cooler, and the stability of the WD Elements is certainly a plus. This is a very fine external hard drive and we would certainly rate this unit at five stars easily. The compact size is another aspect which we like. We will state that we used not the Auto-Run feature, so we cannot speak on that. However, if the unit operates in this fashion (extremely good), we would only believe that Auto-Run would be in line with the aforesaid principles. This is our first WD Hard Drive, purchasing from Amazon, and we shall recommend WD to everyone. Their service is excellent, and customer support is on time. Thank you Amazon.

Looks great if your into all that black
Pros: - Works quickly - Quiet - Power cord is decent length - Sleek, dark look. Looks great if your into all that black. - Very lightweight Cons: - Sometimes slow read time, could be due to the fact that my drive has <2GB free space - Power cable is not like any other cable, its pretty much specific to this drive. Durability of this cable could be brought into question but it has withstood my Cat's attacks for nearly a year. Other Thoughts: All in all this is a great drive. I actually bought it on sale and am really glad I did. Its a year down the road now (literally in 18 days it will be one year) and its still working like a charm. I have had no issues with this WD except when I connected it to my fathers old XP machine and the PC wouldn't turn off while the drive was still connected, even after Ejecting. Although I strongly support SSDs and love how they perform I would recommend this HDD to any one and everyone simply because it is so cheap for the amount of storage. That alongside how compact this device is really makes it worth the money.

Speedy little drive!
This 1TB WD Elements portable HDD is workin' great for me so far. Now I can take my videos where ever I need to take them whilst having plenty of room for a PC back-up on it too. The USB 3.0 is blazing fast! Far better than any of my smaller USB storage devices that use USB 2.0. I ran CrystalDiskMark 64-bit on this drive to test out its speed. And I compared it to my WD Blue 1TB internal 7,200RPM drive. First off, my WD Blue: 5X Read=148.8 & Write=148.0. And the WD Elements USB 2.0: 5X Read=31.05 & Write=29.64. Also USB 3.0: 5X Read=121.8 & Write=122.0. I was able to transfer 119GB of video to it in about 22 minutes. With an average data rate of about 99Mbps though, it slowed to 89Mbps near the end of the transfer with 16GB to go. It does get a little warm when its in use but, nothing too alarming. And the USB cable was a tad short for my liking; good thing I have a USB extension cable! But, If you're using this as an HDD for a console or just for extra storage space on you PC than the short cord doesn't matter; just plug it in, set it up, and forget it! It has little rubber feet so it won't slip off of a slick surface. Also the build is quite nice, its plastic but a sturdy plastic.

The potential for this thing's usefulness is amazing!
I bought this for my wife so she could back up her computer. I thought this was all she would need. One terabyte. That is such a badass sounding number. 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. That's enough to store my entire library of books scanned as PDF files; my stacks of vinyl records and CDs FLAC and MP3 format; scans of my shoeboxes full of negatives and backups of all my digital pictures I've taken over the last 10 years (most of them in RAW + the JPG edits), not to mention scanned bills, birth certificates and scanned appliance manuals. No, I mean this drive is FANTASTIC! It's not even a 2T drive and it is already everything I could want for digital storage. Well It doesn't really work as expected, or rather, it doesn't work as I expected. When I ordered this, it made it to my house quickly. Shipping was super fast. The missus needed it to back up a few years of our family documents and real estate records. This drive itself is the perfect size to fit in a fire-resistant lock box inside a safe. When the time came for my wife's computer to eat it's internal drive, I thought: "Oh man, we can just get a new computer and just put our data back and just press on with life!" It's formatted so that we can use it on a Macintosh so I could possibly justify getting her that MacBook Pro she's been ogling! Sweet! We're not stuck using this thing with just one platform. So, when I asked her for the drive she told me it was in the guest room closet. When I found it, it was tucked away neatly on the shelf, where it fit perfectly. I noticed the packaging was very tidy, small and easy to open. Even though when I opened it it was the first time the drive had been taken out of the box. Hmm. Turns out that motivational pamphlets explaining the importance of backing up your computer's data aren't included. And, if they were they might not even get read but that hardly warrants knocking a star off of the rating. Would I buy this again? Yes. Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes, and they have purchased their own too. Would I take the time later and help my wife back up her data? Yes. I will take the time to set up Time Machine on her new Mac for her so all she would have to do is plug it the drive and forget about it. ---[20160809]--- This little thing is still chugging along. I might buy another while the price is this low.

Satisfied Student !
I just got it in the mail last night. It was right on time as suggested by the seller. The 3.0 speed is very fast and still needing some more testing. But overall very lightweight and its good deal for 79$ getting a whole 1 TB. As a student this is super beneficial to my education when needing to copy files higher then a typical USB. The plus side of it being portable its easy to carry around in ur bad or even hand. No power outlets and works directly via USB.
