Does the magnetic base attach well to open back headphones with a mesh design? Friends have purchased this and struggled to get adhesion

Sticks perfectly fine on my headphones. Using Sennheiser hd 598sr headphones which open back mesh design i think. Got it August 2019 and still sits firm.

Will the latest version work with xbox (i note that it's not compatible with xbox 1?)?

Unfortunately it will not work with any known Xbox device as of 2022.

How many magnets do you get in the box? What if i want to swap it to a different device?

Each box has 2 magnetic clasps with pre-installed adhesives and 2 extra adhesives. 3 Additional clasps can be purchased in the accessory combo pack, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Antlion-Audio-ModMic-Accessory-Combo-Noir/dp/B00VW9TP1S/. It is not suggested to remove the adhesive and re-use it, but removing it should not cause any harm to your device. You can also just buy the adhesive separately. It's 3M 3941 VHB Tape (the number is important). You can usually find a roll of the stuff for about 15 GBP or so, which would last you a lifetime of ModMics (but it has a lot of uses).

Is there a way to use it on oculus quest with no pc

Unfortunately no, the Quest and Quest 2 do not have a mic input (USB or otherwise) for external mics.
