Embrace the you that you were created to be.
Poor Hilda. She's a cow, but she is bored silly about it. Cows don't do anything but moo all day. That's why Hilda decides to be something else. When she gets bored again, she keeps trying to be another animal and then another and then.... Let's just say nothing works out for Hilda until she finally realizes that she needs to be a cow. This book never makes the comparison to people, but too many of us are like Hilda. We always think something else HAS to be better than what we have or who we are. We jump through all kinds of hoops trying to be what we are not, but many of us never figure it out as well as Hilda does. Of course she didn't have the TV trying to sell her all kinds of things she doesn't need or people at school trying to convince her she isn't good enough or cool enough as herself: she needs to change. Unfortunately, children DO have the pressure to fit in with the image others have pushed upon them.Hopefully when you read this with your children, you can point out the fact that Hilda was exactly what she was meant to be, and she didn't need to keep trying to be something else. Help them to understand that they are special just the way they are. Sure, they can always strive to be a better person, but that doesn't happen because they try to be someone else. It happens when they learn their strengths and weaknesses and then build on their strengths. Are they caring and compassionate? Maybe they would make a great counselor, teacher, doctor, nurse, or parent. Are they great at math? So are accountants and engineers. Do they have great imaginations? How about being an author or inventor?Hilda was bored being a cow because she wanted to do more than just moo all day. OK. So why not learn to do more than that? Why not explore the fields and find new flowers or animals? Why not learn about the important things that only the cows can do (at least on the farm)? Do sheep or pigs or chickens give milk? Nope. She needs to know how important milk is to people.Use this wonderfully illustrated and imaginative story to help children see that each one of us has an important role to play. We don't need to be something or someone we are not, but we need to learn to be the best we can be as the people we were born to be. Your children are counting on you to teach them that they are special, loved, and important just because they are themselves. Don't make them try to be everyone else before they figure it out. Help Hilda see that she is perfectly suited to be Hilda, and Henry is perfectly fine just because he is Henry.

STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF
This is a cute picture book for preschoolers and primary grade children that reminds them to be true to themselves and their unique qualities. Hilda is a cow who decides one day that she would like to be a sheep. She goes to elaborate lengths to change her appearance but eventually decides being a sheep is not fun. Then she decides to become a pig. That doesn’t work out either. Finally, Hilda is sure that being a hen is the way to go. Alas, she is not accepted there. Maybe being a cow is the right choice after all.The rhymes flow well, and the illustrations are simple, colorful and attractive. Recommended especially for children ages two through five.

Adorable book about the journey of self discovery and acceptance
I adored this book, as a farmer and a father. Hilda is not happy with her life as a cow, and goes out trying on different lifestyles in the form of being a sheep, pig and even a chicken.Spoiler Alert! She finds out that being a cow is what she is meant to be, but looks back on her journey of trying different things with appreciation as those experiences helped her learn to be what she always was, a beautiful cow.

This was a gift for my mom (70yrs old) to share with her great-granddaughter/my granddaughter (5yrs old). They LOVE it, switching from this book to the Pout Pout Fish story at least once every visit. It is easy to read, the illustrations are incredible and has made an unbelievable impact on us all.Of course, it's an interactive family activity to get the most out of silly stories and time together
