Only ok
I’ve been a Canon user for years. I haven’t been taking pictures as much lately but needed to replace my Rebel XT and didn’t need all the bells and whistles or lenses. It has a nice weight but feels so plasticy- I’m afraid it’s going to crack every time I bump it or put it down.

Rock bottom Rebel: No bells, few whistles
The runt of the Rebel litter, the EOS 4000D - which was never intended for distribution in the U.S. - is about as basic a dSLR as Canon could make and still slap the iconic Rebel name on it. The body is marked by its very light weight (nearly all plastic, even the lens mount, and it definitely feels it). Control knob on top doubles as the on/off switch in addition to having the usual exposure mode selections. Back of the camera features a low res LCD (inaccurate and crude by current standards) without touch control, plus buttons for WB and ISO and menu navigation. The timeworn 18MP sensor provides very good image quality, especially in RAW mode, but JPEGs are more than acceptable, too, yet with noise already becoming a slight problem at 400 ISO. I used my 4000D (coupled with an equally plastic but sharp Yongnuo 50mm lens) under bright cloudy skies and was pleasantly surprised by the results. Punchy colors and plenty of detail - longtime hallmarks of the Rebel line - along with fairly quick operation are still apparent in this barest of bare bones Rebels. The 1.6x crop factor can a problem when using wide angle lenses, although it does give extra telephoto reach.Video recording is possible, however size options are limited to a mere four choices. After a month of use, I was finally able to find the overrides for the Auto ISO and Auto WB - the control for them isn't obvious (the "Q" button on the back) but at least Canon does allow for manual settings in video mode. Biggest drawback: The camera hasn't a microphone input port for better audio capture - anyone intending to use the 4000D for video interviews or video with dialog/live sound will have to use a dedicated audio recorder and then sync the sound up in post production, since the on-board mic isn't up to the task. That said, 24fps and 30fps video recorded at 1080p is more than acceptable for B-roll on less demanding applications, such as web videos, when sound capture won't be an issue.Another downside, and a rather weird one, is that the hotshoe on top lacks a center contact point - only Canon brand flashes will work on the body, meaning all third party flashes and remote triggers are incompatible with the camera. Additionally, focus points are very limited to the now antiquated nine point system - users most likely will have to do the half-press and recompose technique in order to find the perfect focus area before taking a picture. Not an issue for yours truly, but anyone expecting a more up-to-date focus selection system with a lot more points should look elsewhere. All in all, though, for the $225 that I dropped on it brand new just for gits and shiggles, the Rebel 4000D is an acceptable, if now rather primitive, dSLR. It's nowhere nearly as capable as my almost ten year old T2i and feels positively Neolithic compared to my T4i, but it still has been very enjoyable to take with me when I want an ultra light weight and very simple to use camera for a day of photo fun. There's something to be said for going back to basics, and that's exactly the experience which the 4000D provides.
