Whether you're a beginning knitter or advanced, whether your tastes range from simple knit-purl stitching to fancy Daisy or Moroccan screen, this dictionary of stitch patterns is indispensable! Young knitters, old knitters, hip knitters, traditional knitters: they all enjoy different styles. But every knitter from age 5 to 95 needs a good dictionary of stitches. 400 Knitting Stitches is a comprehensive guide that invites knitters to experiment with a variety of new stitch combinations. The book is conveniently divided into eight categories: knit-purl, crossed and cables, slipped, lacy, double, twisted, cast-off, and fancy stitches. Making a romantic lacy wrap or a classic cable sweater? Whatever your style, there's a stitch in here for you. Each of the 400-plus featured stitches is accompanied by easy-to-follow written and charted instructions, as well as a full-color photograph. A section on basic knitting information and techniques at the front of the book makes this volume even more invaluable. From advanced knitters experimenting with their own designs to beginners looking for clear instruction and explanation, 400 Knitting Stitches is an essential reference for knitters of all kinds. Review: "400 Knitting Stitches: Must have book. Excellent. - Excellent: "400 Knitting Stitches" Potter Craft. I have 5 books on knitting cables. Not ONE of them shows how to knit the multiple rows that make up the entire cable; they only show the "cross", ie the 1 line of knitting in which the crossover occurs. Thankfully "400 Knitting Stitches" Potter Craft, includes ALL the lines of knitting/purling that make up the pattern I need to knit. Excellent photos. Excellent concise info on how to knit it. This book now allows me to create my own patterns. Most of us already have basic scarf patterns, basic sweater patterns. This book allows us to take those patterns to the next step and embellish as we wish with the type of embellishment we prefer. Review: 400 Knitting Stitches - Excellent resource for the serious as well as novice knitter. Each of the 400 knitting stitches includes a photo and explanation of how to create the stitches for your own project. It also includes instruction for each of the types of stitches needed to complete the project that is easy to follow. So, if you don't know much beyond knit and purl, this book will show you how to do much more for some beautiful outcomes. I purchased the spiral bound version. There is a slight problem with this format in that the spiral holes do cut off some of the printed instructions. (A letter or more here and there in each explanation is pierced through by the spiral binding. For the most part however, you can still follow the instruction.) The spiral binding does make the book easier to handle when knitting the examples in the book since the book lays flat.

Very nice book!
I am very glad I did NOT listen to a very long and NEGATIVE review of this book! I am a brand new knitter and even though many of the stitches are way beyond my skill level right now, I know that when I am ready to move on to the more advanced stitches they are just waiting for me in this great resource. I like and appreciate how the book is organized. The pictures are very clear and show great detail of the stitches. There are diagrams and yes, they are small but not impossible to read or access for me. The cover shows very beautiful colored swatches which is what first caught my attention to the book. The pictures of the stitches in the the book are shown in one cream color and some with cream and black, but this is not a problem for me because the detail and beauty of the stitches is plain and clear to me even when I take off my reading glasses and look at them! So, this is my humble, newbie knitter opinion of this book. For me, this is an excellent purchase that I am very happy with!

Very good book, but too small for comfortable reading
The book contains a wonderful selection of beautiful stitches. However, the compact size of the book comes means that stitch instructions don't have complete row-by-row instructions and the stitch charts are tiny. The book describes the rows in paragraph format: "1st row and 3rd rows: do this. 2nd and every alternate row: do that. 5th and 11th rows: knit all. 7th and 9th rows: do that. These last 12 rows form the pattern." So the reader has to take the time to wade through the paragraphs to search for the row. Hmm, this one must be an alternate row... what do you do on row 6? According to the chart, 6 isn't an alternate row like 4, 8 and 10... of course, unless you also read the chart you don't know it isn't just an alternate row. The text doesn't give instructions for row 6. It would be far easier to follow if the book was large enough to accommodate row-by-row instructions: Row 1: Do this Row 2: Do that Row 3: Do this Also, the stitch charts are tiny. I have good eyesight and it's a problem to read them, even with reading glasses. I have to photocopy them, enlarging them at least 200% to make them readable. The Vogue Knitting book doesn't have nearly as many stitch patterns, but uses this row by row approach so the instructions are easy to follow. (I own and like both books, for different reasons. Each stands on its own.) It would be well worth the extra expense to publish an instruction book such as 400 Knitting Stitches in a larger format to make it easier to use. I know publishing it with 3 ring binding instead of book binding is wishful thinking, but...

Perfect Quick Reference for Knitters
I purchased this book on the recommendation of one of my favorite bloggers and teachers on youtube. This is absolutely essential for all knitters. I absolutely love this book. The best part about this book is that each stitch has well-written instructions, a close-up photo so that you can clearly see what the stitch looks like, and a chart. My only complaint is that some of the charts are super small. This book is broken up into sections; Knit & Purl, Slip Stitches, Lace Stitches, Cable Stitches, Twisted Stitches, and Double Stitches. At the back of the book, it has a section with all the chart symbols and what they mean. This book should be part of every knitter's library. It is my go-to book.

Love the Stitch Patterns, but DON'T GET SPIRAL BOUND version
**Love this book but I DON'T recommend the spiral bound. The spiral binding was literally cut through some of the text and the stitch diagrams! Made that content useless. See photos.** WOW, WOW! This is hands down the best book of stitch patterns I've come across so far, and I've been checking out quite a few different ones. This one is CHOCK FULL of stitch patterns that I think are delightful and the variety is terrific. I will say that I have a strong preference for modern style and this book offers just that. While there are some traditional styles included, this one has so many wonderful modern patterns to choose from. Page after page of great patterns. Highly recommend this in PAPERBACK!

SO Well Done!
I’m beyond pleased with this book. I have several stitch dictionaries and this is by far the best one of them all. The swatches look very nice and tidy. The color used for the swatches is perfect. The yarn weight used for the swatches is perfect too. Great, professional photos. Excellent selection of stitches and the big reason I purchased it was for the single colored slip stitch patterns… they are all just great! I’m so excited to add these to my designs.

Basic, easy, interesting but nothing spectacular
I just got this book. I like the size of it. Not too big, not too small so I think it'll be easy to carry out (of course, with a bag) though it'll most likely be on my bookcase for reference most of the times. The layout and design of the book is simple and reader friendly, I think. I haven't tried out the stitches yet since I just got it. But they seem clear enough. Good pictures for reference. Here are a few things right off the top of my head: the stitch patterns are interesting, and lovely. I can probably try out and use many of them easily for sweaters, tops, scarves, etc. I'll say very usable designs. BUT that being said, it's also not very intricate or spectacular. No WOW factor here. So you're really thinking to get extra creative and fancy, this might not be the book. I'm also a little annoyed by the fact that they included left and right versions of same type pattern as included in the number of 400 stitch patterns as though they are completely different. A bit misleading, since it'll probably boil down the actual number of different designs versus variations as only about 250 or 300 (estimate, since I didn't do the math, but really, there are many repeats of same pattern except they are of the mirror image). Given that, yes, they give different look when the pattern goes left or right, and I suppose one can use them in combination to make interesting designs, it is still misleading. That would've been the biggest complaint, other than the lack of complexity. But by no means are they boring patterns either. Simple can be really nice and fun to knit and wear too. And they are beautiful in their own rights. I look forward to knitting up many projects using these patterns.

molto utile

What an amazing book! Essential for new or experienced knitters
I've just taken up knitting for the first time after also recently taking up Crochet. Knitting is more technically tricky but this book soon shows you that you can knit some utterly amazing patterns and stitch types with the minimum of knowledge and effort, and just a couple of needles and some yarn. The more complex 'fancy' patterns are also really clearly explained. I am not sure why other reviewers described this book as 'text heavy' as there are plenty of illustrations, stitch guides and 'how tos' for beginners as well. I've spent a happy week working through most of the Knit / Purl patterns and am now moving on to the more fancy stuff (though cabling is still well and truly beyond me!) An absolutely essential book in my opinion and really great for beginners Good service from the seller (slower than standard 'sold by amazon' but a better price and the book was properly packaged and did not get damaged in transit.
