New Tango, The

I bought this CD on a whim and was immediately floored by the presentation and quality of composition. This is a live album recorded at the Montreux Festival. It possesses a tremendous audio soundstage putting you right there in the audience for the event. Sweet! The New Tango is infused with a light jazz fusion which is new and joyful while remaining true in theme to its Latin roots.Piazzolla and Burton immediately create the exotic fluid mood of this CD with their intro piece "Milonga is Coming." This is a CD for pure musical enjoyment and not dancing. Don't let the other reviewers looking for background Tango music confuse the issue. This music is a fusion of Tango and Jazz yielding a sumptuous and thickly romantic sound coupled with an equally irresistable jazz heartbeat. Burton's Vibes provide accenting on and off tempo syncopation that really sends the music into motion. I could not help but be lifted and carried along with the fresh tropical sounds "The New Tango" provides.

The New Tango was a disappointment. The CD sound was not up to par, and the selections were not the type of tangos I anticipated. I like Piazzolla's Libertango, especially if it is performed by a chamber or full orchestra. This CD performance needed more percussion instruments and color which characterizes South American music. Perhaps this CD would meet a jazz purist's approval. Also perhaps there are no recordings of Piazzolla's music in lush orchestral arrangements, and if not, there should be..

Probably one of the best live performances I have ever heard. Two masters, Piazolla and Burton at their heights. I have bought this recording many times to give to people. Riveting and so sexy.

This is my favorite recording of Astor Piazzolla's music, and Gary Burton does a fantastic job of adding to these tunes. Great recording quality for a live show of this vintage, too. I never even notice that its live until the crowd cheers.

La verdad es que ha sido una recomendacion de una persona entendida en tangos, sabiendo que me gusta el jazz. La combinacion de ambos mundos en un grabacion en directo durante el festival de Montreaux 1986, con el vibráfono de Gary Burton y el bandoneón de Astor Piazzolla, acompañados por violin, piano, guitarra y bajo es diferente, especial, tal como esta definada en la contraportada "suite for vibraphone and new tango quintet".para escuchar con calma y varias veces con el fin de integrar estos sonidos tan marcados y conocidos por separado.Las cortes son:- Milonga is coming- Vibraphonissimo- Little Italy 1930- Nuevo Tango- Laura's Dream- Operation Tango- La muerte del Angel

Tango und Jazz. Manchmal fragte ich mich, wie das funktionieren soll, aber dann entdeckte ich eine Aufnahme von Piazzolla und Gerry Mulligan und war von den Socken. Dann habe ich Piazzolla/Burton gesehen und, nach kurzem Reinhören, gekauft. Ich bin nicht enttäuscht worden. Die Zusammenarbeit mit Gary Burton gibt Piazzolla etwas Luftiges, teilweise Leichtes; wunderbare Harmonien, Klangläufe,ich bin entzückt, habe diese CD bestimmt eine Woche lang nicht mehr aus dem Gerät genommen. Mittlerweile eine meine erklärten Lieblings - CDs. Ich kann sie nur weiterempfehlen, sowohl für Piazzolla- als auch Burton-Fans; andere Rezensenten würden wahrscheinlich irgendwas von "absolutem Muß" schreiben..... Vielleicht denke ich ja mal beim nächsten Hören darüber nach....

In der letzen sein Lebenswerk auf den Punkt bringeden Zeit zwischen Meisterwerken wie Tango zero hour undLa Cammorra. Hier wird deutlich wie sehr das Quintet um den legendären Musiker auf dem Höhepunkt warund zu den besten Musikformationen gezählt werden muss, die je exestiert haben. Zusammen mit Gary Burton weben sie ein Geflecht feinster Nuancen und melodischer Eleganz. Auch gibt es treibendeschwindelerregend Virtuose Passagen. I was anticipating fireworks and bravura - sadly, what ensues is a damp squib of a performance.Despite the competence of the musicians both music and performance are, at best, anodyne.Completely lacking the brutal isolation and indifference yet exquisitely passionate sexuality of the Tango.Each to their own I guess.
