GREAT FAMILY FILM!! WOULD RECOMMEND!
these are funny, touching in places stories from James Herriots books.I think they are really good adaptions of his books, they were made in the 70's, but dont let that put you off because they are really well made,In this series, James asks Helen to marry him, she agrees!!! They get married, go on honeymoon of testing cows for dieases!!!Tristain goes for exams, and again....he has to face wrath of his brother Siegfried as he's failed!!!In total there are 7epsiodes on the dvds. Three dvd's.Its great for just curling up on a cold rainy day (Like Bank Holiday monday!!) and watching,WOULD RECOMMEND, GREAT FAMILY FILM!

Simply splendid
Wonderfully charming! Looking back to a time when Great Britian was GREAT. Ordinary people getting on with life with civility and good manners. Robert Hardy is outstanding as Seigfried in the role he was destined to play. Peter Davidson could not be bettered as the likeable impish Tristan. Overall, charming, engaging & civilised without the unnecessary stiff upper lip. Could watch it again and again. Series one is probably the best of the bunch. Only small criticism, the DVD menu layout is not the most crystal clear, but its only a small irritation and hardly worth consideration, certainly not enough to prevent purchase.

Wonderful classic
This is wonderful. Robert Hardy is brilliant as Seigfried. Series 1 covers James Herriot's arrival in Darrowby through to his courting of Helen. It gives a good insight into rural life in that era and shows the highs and lows of being a vet through some realistic (and at times comical) situations. The characters are very different from each other and the resulting blend is a classic. I saw the series when it first came out and it has lost none of its magic over time.

A good mix of veterinary drama and humour.
I missed seeing these on TV and am enjoying the early years. It is probably advisable to spread one's viewing over a few weeks (or months) as storylines can otherwise become repeatative - I am on the second foot and mouth outbreak already! The pre-war Yorkshire atmosphere is excellent.

Vets at Large, Yorkshire style.
Thoroughly enjoyed seeing the series again after watching it when originally broadcast back in the 1970's. Although its essentially about James Herriot's experiences, aptly played by Christopher Timothy (without a trace of a Scots accent!) full credit has to go to Robert Hardy as the indominitable Siegfried Farnon, James' boss. All characters very believable and a young Peter Davison as Tristan gives a bit of comedic atmosphere to the frustration that these primitive working conditions ensued. Great Yorkshire scenery a bonus.

Good old fashioned family viewing.
I remember watching this as a child with my family in the 70s. As enjoyable as I remember, and all good clean fun, although someone always seems to have a drink or cigarette in their hand! Nice, easy viewing.

I have bought the complete series of this excellent programme, but had mislaid this particular volume
I have bought the complete series of this excellent programme, but had mislaid this particular volume. I was hesitant at buying a used copy, but my fears were misplaced. It was perfect.I believe this to be one of the best long running series the BBC every produced. In the same league as Heartbeat.

L'aventure continue
