One of his best
Don't number me among those fans who prefer the younger, more manic McGuane to the more mature one. His writing is consistently superior; his age is immaterial. The earlier stuff is more wicked and, hence, more wickedly funny, but don't think for a minute that his sense of humor has left him. The scene in which he meets his future in-laws is among his funniest and is seriously wicked. This book is infused with a kind of sadness that goes hand in hand with growing older. Where in the earlier books that sadness manifests itself with manic, outrageous behavior, in the later ones the hero might be seen as the hapless target of his own bad instincts. Nothing But Blue Skies is beautiful, sad, and funny without being hopeless. The scene in which he and his daughter go trout fishing is gorgeous, both in the physical (rendered) sense and the emotional one. I've read this a couple of times, and look forward to re-visiting it one day.

Too much for me
McGuane is often a bit more than I can take. I get lost. I will concur with all those who say he is a great writer but oftenI must read and re-read a passage to keep up. There are other books of his I have enjoyed much more. I envy his ability to capture a moment, a place and a personality. He makes me angry. I feel so useless and inept! Ha Ha Ha.

Insanely exchanging one delusion of happiness for another
This really captures the dilemma of the later baby boomer crowd quasi hippie yearnings to be the successful business movers and shakers of their communities. Not really the prettiest picture if it's just turning over one realistate deal after an other. Then realize WTF am I doing while I'm losing my family and friends.

One of my favorite McGuane Books ever!
Of all the TM books written, this is probably one of the most interesting, sometimes somber and sometimes laugh out loud funny.

I guess it's a genre, but I'm not in it
Tom McG is a great fishing writer but this is altogether too self-indulgent, posey "novel" writing.
