The Protein Power Lifeplan
J**I
A comprehensive approach to improving your health.
Were it not for Atkins and the Eades' earlier book I would never have picked up this book. I've never given much consideration to my overall health other than being thankful for healthy parents. But I've grown overweight over the past 20 years and finally decided to do something about it. I was drawn first to the low carbohydrate guru, Dr. Atkins, and I owe him a great debt of gratitude as do many (such as the Eades) who fail to give him his just due. I then read The Carbohydrate Addict's Lifeplan by the Hellers followed by Protein Power and now The Protein Power Lifeplan. ALL are excellent books. I read Sugarbusters but did not like their disdain for animal fats and dairy products. The Power Protein Lifeplan takes the diet and dietary change to a whole new level exploring the vast literature on nearly all aspects of our nutrition and health. From the benefits of cod liver oil and magnesium all the way to the importance of exercising one's brain nearly all important health issues are explored. The book does delve into considerable depth and many may not be interested in all the details. Not to worry! Every chapter is summarized at the end. You can go into as much depth as you own intellectual curiosity dictates. As Voltaire said: "Every man is the creature of the age in which he lives; very few are able to raise themselves above the ideas of the time." One need only read the negative reviews of this book to see an illustration of this phenomenon. Most physicians, laymen, government groups and medical groups following the well worn path of least resistance, have parroted the accepted collective wisdom of the "establishment" mouthpieces: our diets should be based on a low fat paradigm. The only problem is they are wrong, dead wrong as it turns out. And in their bovine refusal to acknowledge the evidence demonstrating conclusively the failure of their approach they have done a grave disservice to the public. That's us folks!I am a physician. All my professional life I was steeped in the disinformation regarding low fat diets. And I kept getting fatter and fatter and fatter. Then a friend told me about the low carbohydrate approach to loosing weight. At first I scoffed and rejected out of hand such an outlandish diet. But finally, desperation forced me to at least take a look at this "counterintuitive" approach. And I was delighted that I did! I managed to loose a whopping 16 pounds the first two weeks of the diet. Needless to say I was and am flabbergasted! The Eades convinced me that portion size and total caloric intake are important elements of loosing weight on the low carbohydrate dietary approach. By decreasing my caloric intake I have kick started my weight loss and I am merrily on my way. Remember, restricting portion sizes and protein levels is NOT difficult since fats have the effect of producing satiety and since you are no longer ingesting carbs your insulin levels are no longer whipsawing your glucose levels. In other words, your food is not longer sabotaging your diet! Your food is actually working FOR you instead of against you.And how does the diet accomplish this miraculous feat? By harnessing the body's own physiology to work in concert with your objectives. Sort of like letting the body have YOUR own way! The objective of the Eades approach (and all low carb approaches) is to reign in the out of control insulin levels which can wreak havoc with your body and health causing hypertension, heart disease, hyperlipidemia (high blood cholesterol), and excessive fat storage (obesity!).Many have stated that when they go off the diet they gain the weight back. Well DUH! This is a practical and lifelong approach to keeping the weight off. But you must restrict the amount of carbs in your diet for this approach to work. Otherwise you'll be back to your old addictive habits in no time with all the attendant health risks.I ingest fewer carbs than are allowed by the Eades and find I am able to more easily stay on this dietary plan. By increasing my carb levels I am simply "playing with fire." I am VERY susceptible to the siren's song of carbohydrates. By reducing my portion size and amount of protein I seem to have accelerated the weight loss. Now there are those naysayers who whine and bellyache that they can't stay on the diet or that they feel too deprived or that they are nauseous, or that they are weak or blah, blah, blah blah blah. THESE symptoms are due to WITHDRAWAL from carbohydrates and it is your body trying to sabotage your dietary changes. Hang in there! And then there are some (VERY few) on whom the diet does not work. Honestly we shouldn't be surprised since quite obviously not all physiologies are alike! But for the overwhelming majority, this diet works great. If you love to eat, hate to count calories, want to improve your overall health and want an approach that WILL work and more importantly that you CAN LIVE with - then this is the diet for you.I've willingly accepted the benefits of this dietary approach and understand that in order to maintain my health and weight I must eat like this for the remainder of my life. The first step for you will be to accept the fact that you are a carboholic! But by going cold turkey, you will gain control of your cravings within 2 to 21 (only in rare cases) days.Oh, I almost forgot to mention. I feel great. No more post meal energy crashes. And I feel 20 years younger. I honestly had forgotten how easily I used to move around. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to at least read this book. And if you don't find the Eades approach to your liking there are plenty of other low carb approaches: Atkins, Neanderthin, South Beach, Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, and Sugar Busters. In my opinion, the best are Atkins and Protein Power.Good luck, and keep an open mind. It may just set you free.

This Book Changed My Life!
I first read this book and changed how I eat because of it around 20 years ago.I became intrigued by low carb diets maybe 30 years ago. Prior to that I was a believer in low fat. I read the Atkins book, but didn't really get it. I tried it. It was hard. I stayed on low fat. Then I read this book. If you don't understand why Atkins works, read this book by Doctors Eads (husband and wife). I finally got it. This book clarified something seemingly complicated. How does a low carb diet work?? I discovered that fat does not make you fat. A low fat (high sugar and grains) diet does make you fat and is seriously not good for you; sugar, especially. Colorful vegetables are fine and many fruits are fine. Now I eat all the saturated and medium-chain fat I want and keep my weight where I want it. Losing weight is easy when I choose to. Keeping the weight loss is easy as well. You even get recipes! I have given away many copies of this book. In fact, I bought this one to give to a friend. This book doesn't just cover low-carb eating. It covers several other important topics .. information that has significantly improved my health over the years. I learned about iron .. how it hides in your body when you get sick because bacteria likes iron. I'm guessing that has a lot to do with why your energy level drops so much when you get sick. Your body is so smart! But, if you have standard blood work it could appear that you're iron-poor, but you're not really. The doctor could think you're iron-poor and should supplement with iron. That could be a bad idea. This book gives you the name of a test to have that gets around that. Men and post-menopausal women could be in danger due to too much iron, such that a mild heart attack could kill you instantly if your iron is too high. They explain how the only way your body has of getting rid of excess iron is by bleeding. Give blood if you can. Then your body can make new, fresh blood. They explain the different types of fat .. spoiler alert .. saturated fat is good for you. Cholesterol is not bad, as we've been told. Your body needs it and uses it for many things. If you've been restricting the butter and fat you eat, you haven't been doing yourself any favors. Cut out sugar and limit grains instead. Don't take my word .. read the book and decide for yourself.

Eating right
Appears to be a good book, briefly skimmed through it, not intending to read it word for word. It seems a little boring for me personally, but the end of each chapter summaries are basically worth reading. The information I am looking for is right there!

I Can’t Say Enough About This Book!!!
I love how knowledgeable the doctors are. And how they’re able to explain things to the reader in plain layman’s terms.I have experienced great success with weight lost and lowering my A1C (blood sugars). I recommend this book to everyone. It’s an easy read and, if applied, will/could change your life. I say this confidently because it has changed mines.

Very Good Followup to Protein Power
I got this book at the same time as Protein Power. I read the older one first. PPL expands on PP, updates some of the research information and calculations. In this book, the Drs. Eades get more into the Paleolithic diet, broken down into 3 styles for modern life. It does seem a little over the top, yet it makes a lot of sense. I love history and anthropology, and this approach does explain a lot regarding our modern diet giving us major problems in the way of diabetes, heart attacks, acid reflux, and a host of other "modern" diseases.BTW, did you know the Egyptians ate a lot of grains and also had heart problems? Just a little factoid there from the book.I am already a low carb lifestyler, but I learned a lot from these two books. The price of the books was worth the information on vitamins and minerals and nutrients, notwithstanding any other information.

Sehr interessante Themen
Es ist fast nicht zu glauben was Michael Eades bereits alles in diesem Buch beschrieben hat. Es ist für mich eins der Standardwerke zum Thema LowCarb. Absolute Empfehlung!

Solid reference book in a world of misinformation
I used their Lose Middle Aged Middle book first and lost some weight. I didn't like their Meat Weeks and turned to Dr Gundry for a more balanced approach. People on their website forum say that LMAM is inferior to this book, so I bought it. First off I found it repeating similar material and put it aside. I then needed information on other health stuff and went back to it. The chapter on sweeteners is one of the most informative and helpful pieces I've found in ages and scary too. The chapter on iron explains clearly views I've heard inside the medical profession for many years. This book is closer to Gundry's work in that they recognise different types and preferences, suggesting that people monitor the impact that various foods have on their weight and body composition. Overall I've continued to lose weight in a healthy way and maintain lean muscle, thanks to their recommendation of branched chain aminos and slow exercise. At a restaurant I can't eat as much as I used to and am not drawn to desserts. I find ice cream too sweet now that my taste buds have retrained. Never shakingly hungry, I can carry on doing physical work long after a normal mealtime without pressure. I like the freedom of guidelines rather than rigid instructions, so take recipes as a pointer. Gundry gave me useful tips on weight loss SLOWING foods, which helped me overcome both blip and plateau. I'll be chucking out some of the recycled information of books by 'nutritionists' and 'naturpaths' and hold on to these 3, which give scientific research to back up their claims. As they say, low glycemic index doesn't tell you the effect something will have on the body, so beware going along with received wisdom on foods and sugars.

Love, love, love this book!
My GP recommended the Eades’ original Protein Power nearly 20 years ago. If only I’d taken it to heart then, I might have saved myself two decades of sub-optimal health.I borrowed The PP Lifeplan from our library, and loved it so much, I knew I’d need my own copy to refer back to. It’s absolutely chock-full of pertinent health information. So much more than a diet book!Kudos to Amazon for timely delivery - book arrived carefully wrapped in plastic, in perfect condition.
