As Dreary as it Seems
Eleven-year-old Verbena Colter is a dreary little drip who apparently has nothing better to do than sit around feeling sorry for herself. Her privileged life is "saaaadddd" because she's recently found out she was adopted, and that she has fetal alcohol syndrome. (The FAS has nothing to do with the plot - it sounds like this is Sarah Weeks' hobbyhorse, so she stuck it in even though it has no relevance.) For some reason, her parents tolerate her bad behavior instead of coming down on her like a ton of bricks. About halfway through the book she meets a 9-year-old boy who unaccountably thinks she's a ghost, and Verbena plays along. For pete's sake, this boy is 9, not 3, and as far as we can gather from the book, he has normal intelligence. Completely unrealistic. But ... Yes! You guessed it! The boy is put in danger, Verbena rescues him, and now she's feeling all beeettteeerrr about herself and her life. Trashy girly emotional glurge, all the way.

It’s Amazing!!!
This book relates to the real world and it shows that if you think you’re having trouble or hard problems, you should look at other people and realize the truth.

Another wonder from Sarah Weeks
A powerful story about the devastating effects of fetal alcohol syndrome. It's also about family, making friends, and accepting the life we have been given. Gratefully it's not too sweet and sappy but heartfelt.
