great homebrewing boiling kettle thermometer
Needed a kettle thermometer with a reach of 13" or more into my deep 20 Gallon brewing kettle. I contacted Cooper Atkins directly and they advised all needed to do was remove the wooden handle and I would have 14" of reach...perfect! It has a big face that is easy to read. Very solid build. perfect for home brewing. Read 212F at boil and during wort cooling, it read 75F (so did a second instant read thermometer I use as a back up). Accuracy is not in question.Update, this sucker lasted 4 years, and provided great temp readings for all my home brew sessions. I dropped it down the stairs and the glass face shattered. Not gravity resistant :-) time to order a new one.

Works great, is LARGE
This thing works great but I didn't quite understand how large it was from the photos. This thing is enormous. Like a foot and a half long. The clip on it is adjustable to fit any pot, but it'll be sticking a foot into the air if you use a small pot. This thing is clearly designed for commercial use and not home chefs.

Very large Deep fry thermometer with a flaw
I bought this themometer because I wanted a quality deep fry themometer. The first thing you realize is that this thing is very large, much larger than I thought it was going to be. It's about double to three times the size of a normal deep fry thermometer. This makes it easy to read. I also like it because it has an "ideal" mark on the dial for deep dry temp 325-400 degrees. That way you know quikly when your oil is at the right temp for frying. This thermometer is well built and seems to be of higher quality then those cheap frying themometers that you see everywhere. The stem is long and thick (about the thickness of a pencil) and doesn't come to a point, it's just flat on the end. I used it for Thanksgiving for frying a turkey. So how does it work? Well, the first time I put it in the oil to test the temp I noticed that it took forever to get a reading. The needle moves very slowly compared to my other cheap themometers. Now, this may not be a problen if you just leave it in the oil the whole time, but my fryer doesn't have a way for me to do that. This thermometer does have a clip on it so you can do just that, but I couldn't use it. The second time I checked the oil temp, I got tired of waiting for this thermometer to reach it's full temperture reading, also my hands were getting hot from being close to the oil ( I know, I could have worn gloves). I got fed up and just used a long probed digital themometer I had, which read the temperture much quicker and I think more acurately. I love the larger size and the build quality, but the reading speed is far too slow for me. Therefore, I can't recommend it.

Best analog fry thermometer period.
I have to say since I cook for a living, this is well worth the money and performs awsome as a fry thermometer. I would consider myself a thermometer geek and have an extensive collection. This is well constructed and beats most on the market. Better options are 3-4x the cost and just don't justify purchase. On my second unit as my first gave up the ghost after 6yrs in the trenches used about 4x month.

Not what I anticipated
This thing is huge! My fault as I didn't realize how big it really was. Could be a great item but not for my use. I was looking for a temperature gauge for use in my BBQ and this just wasn't it.

Vessel Clip Needs Modifying!!
I used this item immediately upon receiving it and then again the next day. The large dial is great, easy to read. Haven't tested the accuracy yet and am assuming that it is accurate and will edit this review if I find otherwise. Here is my major gripe. It is with the vessel clip. I used this for deep frying in a cast iron dutch oven. The d.o. is about 4-5 inches deep. The vessel clip will not old the thermometer in the pot when adjusted/moved to that far down on the rod. It simply falls/tips out of the pot. I made and attached a piece of metal to the clip that would extend down the outside of the pot. It worked but the thermometer was still pretty unstable. The next day I lengthened the piece that went on the outside of the pot and tripled the thickness of the material, It was now pretty stable vertically but not side to side. So, I attached another piece of metal to the top of the clip that would run along the top of the pot and stabilize the thermometer side to side. My modifications seem to work ok or at least to the point that I'm not so worried about the thermometer falling over and out of the pot.If I were using this thermometer in a very deep pot with vertical sides I probably would have rated it 4 or 5 stars but it simply isn't going to work in a 4-6 qt dutch oven or anything smaller that doesn't have vertical sides.
