The Gorey illustrations are what make this book especially wonderful. Just a short, meaningful, profound little book on some of the joys of life and sadness of grief.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short story - more hopeful than many Gorey stories. Edward Gorey is NOT a storyteller for children; although he's in many ways less grim than the Grimm Brothers, his stories strike are often parodies of what many of us erroneously hold dear. Edward Gorey is a storyteller for adults in our times.

Great Edward Gorey book! His illustrations and story are superb, my new favorite. Order was shipped promptly and arrived in perfect condition. Don't you love it when everything works the way it's supposed to.

With Gory it’s all about the drawings, and he knocks it out of the park with this book.

I have collected Edward Gorey's books for a few years. They are darkly humorous with black ink drawn illustrations that add to their macabre charm. The man is genius (okay, was a genius ~ he is dead)I would not hesitate to buy any book he has (had) written. Go for the hardvover editions ~ deals to be had if you carefully buy used books. Amazon is a wonderful resource for Gorey treasures.

Short,Simple but profound

ある日突然 Emblus氏の帽子の上に飛んで来た鳥。大きなくちばしと長い長い脚。その脚で器用にもリュートを弾いたり優雅にティーカップを持ってお茶を飲む。仲睦まじく暮らす様子が微笑ましい。トランプで激しい攻防を繰り広げ、一週間口をきかずにいても、互いにそむけた背中ごしに相手を盗み見る場面がお気に入り。切ないラストを迎えるけれど、あのゴーリーさんがこんなに素直にほのぼのした話を書くのだろうかと疑心暗鬼に陥ってしまった。
