Very informative volume on some quite easily obtained psycho active substances..Highly recommended
Very informative volume on (in most place) some easily obtained and legal substances that can alter consciousness. This book not only outlines very well the history behind a lot of the substances and herbs it discusses, but also gives at least for those I have read so far, users experiences with them. This makes it so much more useful than just another book that tells you that such and such will get you high. Some of the items listed such as Salvia, Nutmeg and Morning Glory seeds I am familiar with from my youth (unfortunately a long time ago ), and can testify to the accuracy of the descriptions given. I have heard at least in New Zealand that Morning Glory seeds are now injected with a poison to make them potentially toxic to humans. I am not sure of the accuracy of that, what I do know is that back in the early '80's when we were trying them they were sprayed with strictnine as an anti fungal I believe, so required very careful preparation with lots of washing before using. What a pity that is, I feel this utter fear on society's part, that says we must govern what individuals ingest, even when there are plenty of good descriptions around that suggest that yes you might possibly not enjoy the ride, but for the most part many of these things are not harmful, especially when compared to that old favorite Alcohol.I found the book insightful, interesting and humorous in parts mainly due to the many good memories that came back as I read it through. If you are an adventurous spirit who wishes to dabble or just someone interested in the psycho active properties of some of natures compounds and substances this book should be on your shopping list. When first we played with some of these we had a great volume to get inside knowledge from called "The New Zealand Whole Earth Catalog - Volume 2" long out of print now.Have fun and stay safe.. remember start small, and not too often!

Kratom
i want to focus on Todd's chapter on Kratom. I believe being a 9 year more than daily user makes me pretty close to an expert on kratom. don't take those anecdotal stories in this book to heart. they are all wrong. every one of those people OVER dosed on kratom. if you have visual disturbances, cross-eyed effects, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, apathy which i heard in all the stories those are each one and all together signs of not knowing your body in relation to your kratom dose and you took TOO MUCH. kratom should relieve your pain, calm you, it will NOT feel like you took vicodin or heroin or percocet so don't look for that. it will give your mood a little boost. it will make you feel like you can work harder and with a better attitude. so when your day is dragging, your back is hurting, take the RIGHT dose and 30 min later, no pain, and suddenly you can get through the rest of your day as if it was the now the start of the day. it RE energizes. it RE invigorates. unfortunatly if you take it like i do you will become physcially addicted. and that is so bad. SOOOO bad. i can't get off it. i tried once for 6 weeks and the pain and torture i went through never let up. so hopefully it stays legal. i have TERRIBLE leg pain no one can figure out. and it works. i would NEVER take a "real" narcotic. plus! if you take kratom and then try to take a "real" narcotic it BLOCKS the narcotic from working. questions email [email protected]

WORTH THE READ
Got this book out of curiosity and I'm glad I bought it. It's highly informative not just giving information on the fact that certain substances are psychoactive but the details as to what they do, and also included is some of the science as to why they work like they do. There is as well, included the risks involved with trying any of these substances. If you're curious or in need of research material for a paper or book, this book is highly informative and worth the read.

Not entirely safe
One of the references this book gives is huffing paint, which has been proven to kill brain cells.Read with caution.

Thorough
The book is very thorough; it contains sources, methods, first person accounts, history/background, and more. It is a bit out of date, however, and you night want to double check legality and sourcing in your particular state.

Gread resource and read.
Very good resource book, even as a non-smoker, though supporter I enjoy information of all kinds, and have been using liquid kratom for a few months since finding it at a shop. It is fantastic for my acute chronic back and hip pain, in place of my doctors refusal to prescribe anything, like that there is a section on kratom. Thank you.
