Diappointing
The first season is absolutely disappointing, one of the weakest plots ever, boring, the only good thing is the Indian backdrop but that is obvoiusly not enough.

Fantastically evocative of a lost era, but not simply a romanticised version. This is a "warts and all" expose of both the ruling classes and their subjects in the Indian sub-continent. "Cynthia" played deliciously by Julie Walters is the Machiavellian and manipulative owner of the Symla Club, frequented by British ex-pats watching their grip on power slowly being eroded. The Viceroy's attitude that divide and conquer has worked for over 100 years and why shouldn't it continue, is juxtaposed with a more enlightened view and a struggling native majority fighting to be heard. The sets and locations are breathtakingly well-realised and the acting has energy, subtlety, wit and pathos. Above all the writing is sharp and exceedingly well researched, imbuing everything with a realism and attuned understanding to both the turbulent times and the beautiful complexity of its inhabitants. This is a gem of a series and I can't wait for the release of the second season.

Reality.
Look at this as reality, a time & place in history, with the belief system of the period, most important not to take sides, be critical or apportion blame, its been done all over the world throughout history & unfortunately is still happening now, when one culture believes themselves superior they will progressively crush those who they believe to be Inferior. In time, things change but the inferior do not forget. When they become the superior they will behave exactly the same. Wonderful piece of work, with no punches pulled.

Highly recommended.
Just started to view the series which promises to be an interesting period in India's past in the 1930's

Slow going
I found it a little disjointed at first, but if you stick with it once the story starts to develop much better.
