Howlin' Wolf - The Definitive Collection - desertcart.com Music Review: One of the Masters - I bought this mostly for Killing Floor, but looking at the song list I recognized several tunes. I try to imagine the young British musicians listening to these tracks back in the day. Clapton, Page, Stones, etc. I love the cd. Grab a beer or two and let the Wolf run wild... Review: Howlin' Wolf Definitive Collection - Nice cleaned up CD with a great selection of songs. The booklet gives credit where all the credit is due to the musicians who backed "The Wolf". I was glad to see Hubert Sumlin's name there who we just lost on December 4th, 2011 (RIP Hubert) as well as every other player in each song. It has been in my car CD player since it arrived and it is all that I am listening to now. My 12 year old loves it too. This is the real deal and I own a lot of The Wolf and other blues players! If you are new to the blues, this CD will wet your whistle and have you go out to buy more. Buy this and keep the blues alive! The Blues needs you!

The real McCoy.
Howlin' Wolf AKA Chester Burnett was one of the greatest blues singers ever. He was a real gut bucket howler. What a powerful voice!!!!! I suspect that he could play a club with a small electric backing band and not need a microphone. This is a great collection. Every cut is a winner. These recordings are kinda primitive and stripped down, but very soulful. This man also had great material, much of which was written by Willie Dixon. Countless white rock/blues groups recorded his tunes. It is a shame that Wolf never got the recognition that he deserved. He only appeared on national TV once.

Howl, Yes !
What's not to like about this collection of iconic recordings from one of the most recognizable voices in all of blues? Howlin' Wolf remains the Soul of the Real Deal. Most of these classic songs have been covered by, and become hits by, other artists, but the 'Wolf's gritty renditions will send chills down the spine of any observer of the human condition. Yes, I would call this collection 'Definitive'.

Must have in your collection
Many of the great (now "classic") rock bands were emulating blues musicians, if not, outright trying to be great blues players. This album shows you why. Howlin' Wolf had that same talent as did Robert Plant (~15 years afterward) to perfectly blend his voice into the rest of the band and elevate the music to a whole new level. You can also hear how electric guitar solos were used to enrich the song. Of course, this feature later became a defining trait of great rock music, even though this album still remains primarily in the blues genre. The album is practically a history lesson, and is great listening.

While there are more extensive, and expensive, multi CD sets of the great Howlin Wolf, this is a very well done collection of his better known songs. It is an excellent starting point for someone who is just starting to appreciate this superb bluesman.
