This is book is a great gift for some one who loves the cinema
I bought this book as a gift for my son who loves the cinema. He graduated with a degree in Film Studies. I'm certain he loved the book. He ignored his mother and me so he could read the book when we together for Christmas. When he left, he said it was a huge book and that he was excited to have it.Hopefully, he'll share it with me sometime this year.

Well received gift
This is a beautiful book, coffee-table size and printed on thick, glossy paper. An outstanding moment from each of a selection of films is described and illustrated with still photos. Makes the reader want to go back and review some of the old movies cited. I spent hours with this book before I could bring myself to wrap it as a gift!

Coffee-table book, just for the photos
I was shocked to read some of this coffee-table book. It doesn't serve any purpose at all. David Thomson says, in the introduction. that it's personal. OK, but he doesn't even mention what moments he regards as memorable in the films. He childishly says " Oh, I'm not going to tell you." An self-negating idea or an oxymoron. NOTHING would attract you to spend time & energy to find something which you don't know. David tries to outline the plot in a weird way again. An example is "Celine & Julie Go Boating". As I remember, a lot happens in a boat ridden by the two girls. Thomson says : ... and there's a boat. That's it. There'a boat. Go find out. It's extremely frustrating. Why to write such a nonsense. A few pictures are good. That's all. Don't buy it. It's a total waste.

A god gift
I gave this book to by boy friend for Christmas. As he is a Turner Classic Movie buff and loves movie trivia , it was the perfect gift. It has given him the incentive to read more about movies. Thank you.

Entertaining, but badly written
Thomson's writing, apart from being ungrammatical, is obscure. In his effort to be cute, he sometimes makes it hard to distinguish between actors and characters. I was, however, prompted by the book to reevaluate some films, so I can say that the book did what he hoped it would. Thomson should have better editors.

Made a great gift
Bought it as a gift for a film maker who lives and breathes movies. He loves it. I looked through the book and found it quite interesting. Might borrow a copy.

A beautifully produced book
We bought this for our adult movie-loving daughter and saw how at Christmas she was always referring to it. The quality of the paper and the photos was top notch. It made her add to her wish list onLovefilm for sure. Might get the book for ourselves soon.

Great!
Bought this for my boyfriend who loves films more than anyone else I know (and I worked in a cinema for years!). He treats this book like a bible and a bucket list for films he yet wants to see. Great pictures of the films listed as well!

It's worth the money
Definitely still one of the best and most idiosyncratic writers on the cinema.
