Update Your Style!
Basically, this is a guide to looking your best. Whether it's to improve your chances at an upcoming job interview, or to give yourself a makeover, it covers everything you need to know to dress and style yourself successfully.I'd heard nothing but good things about the first edition of this book, but I didn't buy it because it was rather dated. Imagine my delight when I learned they were finally updating and revising it! I purchased it as soon as it was released and it's every bit as good as I'd hoped. Some of the topics it covers:* Choosing appropriate colors for your wardrobe, accessories, and makeup.* Determining what silhouette your body is, and picking clothing styles that will flatter your shape.* Choosing fabrics and accessories that are scaled to flatter your size, whether you're tall, average, or short.* Choosing hairstyles, glasses, and jewelry that will look best with the shape of your face.* Finding your personal style, whether it's classic, sporty, romantic, artistic, or dramatic, and dressing accordingly.* Sorting through your closet--tossing items that don't work, and adding pieces that go together to create multiple outfits.* Picking the best undergarments.* Updating older garments for a new look.Really, this book covers everything you need to know for a complete makeover from head to toe. Not just clothing, but hairstyles, makeup, and accessories. It addresses different body types, different style preferences, and different color palettes, so no one is left out. It's filled with photos, sketches, and diagrams that illustrate all the tips and tricks, and these are, for the most part, updated to reflect current styles. Now, I wouldn't say this is cutting edge fashion . . . if you're searching for advice on how to look like a runway model, this isn't the book for you. It's more about picking flattering styles that will endure for awhile. Some of the advice given is traditional, like choosing V-necks to help you look taller and more slender, or adding thin shoulder pads to balance your upper body if you're fuller in the hips (or have sloping shoulders). But a lot of the advice is unique, tips I'd never heard before. All in all, this book is a great resource! I'm recommending it to anyone who wants to adjust their image, take things up a notch style-wise, or just learn how to dress and accessorize appropriately for their size and shape (whatever that might be). Five stars!

Excellent Resource for Everyone!
This book is excellent for everyone - sewer or non-sewer. I am recommending it to all of my friends. We all spend so much money buying clothing and/or fabrics/patterns/notions, and invest so much time wearing our clothes, shopping, and for some of us sewing. Buying this book and spending the time to learn from it will be paid back to you in saving you from just one poor purchase or project! And it continues to be a great reference guide. I wish I could meet the author and have her redo my wardrobe, but this book is the next best thing.Since I have read this book, people are complimenting me quite often on what I am wearing. Something that is really new is complete strangers are commenting and complimenting me on what I am wearing and my fabric choices in fabric stores! That is NEVER happened to me before!I learned so much even though I researched and tried to think about these things in the past. It has changed the way I look at colors and designs, and I now understand what colors, shades, combinations are right for me, as well as design features. I now understand that it is ok to stick with certain colors and designs that are right for me - that is not boring, but wise! I now understand why I have gravitated to some colors and styles my whole life, and why some colors and styles have not worked, no matter how much I tried to wear them - and wasted money on them! This book goes way beyond the "four seasons” it its coverage of color analysis, and it also goes way beyond the basic body types so it is a huge help and learning experience. You will learn so much! Nancy successfully balances the book to serve every type of person in the color analysis and body type analysis yet I learned from all the information. While she is discussing what looks good on someone else and why, she is also showing to me why those colors or designs would not be good on me.There is so much great information. It has taken me a while to soak it all in, but it is worth it. I have read a several sections more than once and taken some notes. That is helping all the value sink in. And I spent some time in a fabric store draping various fabrics on myself in front of a mirror to test what I have learned. What is funny about that is people would comment about how perfect a fabric is for me as they passed by. Again, that has NEVER happened to me before!Nancy is also extremely professional, respectful, and encouraging about our various body types and coloring. She can help all women (and men!) look the best they can with the bodies they have and feel great about it! This book really is very close to having her plan a wardrobe just for me!!

Good classic info on dressing
An updated version of the original. Great basic how to look good and classic. Would especially be a great read for younger people going into the workplace since many have no clue as to what it appropriate attire for work, play and a night out.
