Tom ClancySubmarine (Tom Clancy's Military Reference)

Great military reference!
I'm writing a novel that includes a scene inside a nuclear attack submarine and wanted to get a feel for what subs are like inside and how they operate. "Submarine" by Tom Clancy, although somewhat dated, gave me all the detail I needed to write the scene I have in mind. Great military reference!

I can't believe the Navy let him write this.
Even with the addition of the Sea Wollf and Virginia class submarines, to some this book will be somewhat dated. However, I think it is still a valuable part of technical history and really helps you understand the hide and seek prospective of submarine warfare". Clancy makes even the mundane seem interesting... heck, I even found the description of the ship's galley to be facinationg. My only disappointment is that Tom Clancey doesn't write more non-fiction.

Informative glimpse into a secretive world.
Very unique book, with loads of information regarding submarines. The data might be old, but it offers a glimpse into this secretive world.

Clancy is always a good read
Even though this is not one of his fictional yarns, Clancy has clearly done his homework. Over the decades he has made many friends in high places in the U.S. military who share their long experience and knowledge with him... to the great benefit of his readers. I grew up in Norfolk, Virginia, and have been on many subs through the years. This book was right on and a pleasure to read. Needs to be updated now, though, with the advances in the nuclear subs.

A very thorough description of US attack submarines and the equipment and weapons they use. I'm using this book as a reference to the Tom Clancy novel "SSN" which I also bought from Amazon

A disdainful product from a company that despises its customers and books in general
Certainly over the years the physical quality of books has declined which I suspect is to be expected. But this reprint reaches a new low in production value. Cheap, thin, almost translucent paper. To combat this they've used a grey ink rather than black hoping to avoid seeing the reverse print - not only failing to prevent see-through they've made the printed face hard to read. Informative graphics that may have originally been two page spreads (or rotated to fit the page horizontally) have both been shrunken and cropped to fit a vertical page, in some cases chopping at least half the graphic. As a further testament to the amateurishness and incompetence of Berkley - the printer marks are included in the hacked images. Photos are poorly reproduced and only serve to highlight the pathetic choice of ink. A bit of life advice to the good people at Berkley Publishing - if you don't like what you do why do it at all?
