I didn't realize until I contacted the manufacturer about the lids leaking, that the gasket that fits inside the lid is designed to have the ridge pointing out. (I'd put the ridge toward the inside of the cap). Once that was sorted out, they no longer leak. So far I have filled 18 of these containers and they all fit horizontally under my queen-size bed. Then I emptied and thoroughly rinsed each unit and let it dry. I also soaked the lids and gaskets the same way and let them dry. It was not my intention to rid the containers of odor by doing this. I did it because I am storing water in these for several years and I wanted to ensure a sterile environment before filling. This had the additional benefit of removing the odd odor left over from manufacturing. I then used 43 drops in each unit of "H2O ResQ Water Storage" (available on desertcart) for additional safety. Some people also complained about the handles not staying in place when storing. This is true, however, I feel this is a good thing since the handles must be removed when installing the available ventless spigot. I have not used the spigot yet so I cannot rate it. The handles usually do not completely fall off when stacking horizontally and usually just one side does and that is easy to fix before lifting. The only issue I have found so far is leakage when storing horizontally. You MUST set the unit on its side and observe for a few hours for any slow leaks. So far I have had four with slow drips. The problem was easily fixed by removing the lids and reseating the gaskets. Once I was sure there were no more leaks, I put them under my bed and have not had any problems so far. These are a perfect storage solution for those with limited space. I am sure they can be used for all sorts of things besides water. Longer is probably fine, you may just want to oxigenate the water (simple pour in back and forth between two cups/containers). **Q: would this sink or float if placed in a pool?** A: Empty it floats. Full it sinks. Objects that are more dense than water sink and those less dense float. Hollow things often float too as air is less dense than water. **Q: Made in the USA?** A: Yes **Q: Has anyone experienced a fowl smell in the containers? I don’t feel comfortable filling these with water!** A: They definitely have a strong plastic odor. I left mine sitting open for a couple days and rinsed with soap and warm water twice.
