Decent reel for the price
To be honest, I wasn't really sure if this reel would be OK based on the selling price. I was pleasantly pleased with the quality and performance of the reel as compared to some of my more expensive models that I own.Easily converts from a Left Hand to a Right Hand reel by simply reversing the bearings.

Nice machined reel with a major caveat.
I decided to try a Maxcatch Avid 1/3 reel and a Maxcatch Premiere rod (both pictured with Maxcatch backing and an Anglers Dream 3 wt floating line) just to check out the quality and see if the products are any good. The Avid reel is nicely machined and the drag is okay. Mine does loose it’s setting and sometimes finds it again, which isn’t great. Also, this price is commensurate with a reel that doesn’t have a sealed drag. This means that if you get the reel wet it will slip and or just loose it’s tension entirely depending on how wet it gets. Also, there’s no instructions to tell you how to clean and lubricate the drag bearings. If you’re looking for a serious reel, especially for salt or big game fish, then look at manufacturers that make machined reels with sealed drags.

wish i found this brand earleir
been fly fishing a long time and have a lot of VERY expensive gear. was recently heading to costa rica to fish for roosters, mahi, tuna, and sails. didnt want to go with a big name $1000 reel for a single trip so i gambled on max catch and won, this reel stopped every fish we caught while throwing big flies at patties and even while throwing at fish we teased in when trolling!!! the drag worked excellent and (hate to say this for the other mfgs I own) but this reel worked as well as reels costing tons more. also note - i also bought the matching 10w max catch fly rod!!then, later went and bought the 8w reel and rod too.NOTE: i am not being paid to write this review. i legit bought these 8wt and 10wt reels/rods and slayed about 30 mahi on them in CR.

Worth every penny
I have been fly fishing for over 40 years and owned a bunch of different reels from Hardy to Orvis. This little reel is above and beyond those reels in terms of quality to dollar ratio. It is even nice than some reels I have owned that cost four to five times as much as this little reel. The machining is clean and anodizing looks good. The drag may not stop a Steelie but it's going on a 1wt so I don't need to worry about that. This little reel is worth every penny they are asking for it. I hope they don't realize it's actually worth a little more.

Impressive value
Fly fishing is certainly not a poor mans sport. My old 5wt reel was worn out, and i needed a quick replacement for a trip I was about to take. Really didn't feel like dropping a couple hundo on a quality reel for a rod I use very infrequently. Looking at some lower priced alternatives, I came across this one. The reviews left by others are SPOT ON. I'd put this reel up against ANY mid-price name brand reel. The drag is nothing short of superb. It is crazy how well this reel is built. I will be buying another one very soon for another rod build.

Smaller than expected
I haven't even put line on here yet - it seems way too small. I ordered the 9/10 expecting to add backing and switch chucker line, but in comparison it seems very small in diameter. It is wide so it might end up being okay but it just looks off. It seems to function very well and hand testing the drag seems great and swapping from L/R took all of 30 seconds. The finish is every bit as good as my (slightly) more expensive reels.

VERY impressed
This reel arrived yesterday and I spent part of my evening loading the baking, fly line and tapered leader. The workmanship on the reel was VERY nice. The fly line was surprisingly supple and didn't show much, if any, line memory. When I took the reel out to my local pond to cast poppers for bass, I was VERY impressed with reel, and equally impressed with the included floating, weight forward line. The line passed through the rod eyes with ease and floated high on the water surface. I'll be looking for more MaxCatch products for my fishing arsenal.
