Serger Sewing Basics

Great Book on Serging
I chose this book because it seemed to be the newest out of all the books on serging and I'd been told that sergers have changed so much in the last ten years that the older books are obsolete. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but I found the book to be both comprehensive and educational. One of my sewing students wants me to teach him to use a serger, so I got this book hoping it would serve as a guide for us both. I learned a great deal and my student was pleased to get the book once I'd finished reading it.The book covers the basics of how to thread the machine, adjust the tension, how to use the different stitches, etc. At the end, it has several easy projects you can make using your serger. I'd give it five stars and recommend it to anyone who's just starting out with a serger.

Better than expected
The book was labeled as condition acceptable. When it arrived it was like new. I was very pleased. It didn't look like it had ever been opened. It was shipped out rather quickly and arrived in the time frame. It arrived in my state rather quickly, but took a long time getting to my town. Not the fault of the seller.

Book is for my wife
Again this is a book that should be a benefit to my wife as she begins to work with her new serger. She has sewn for a lot of years and has just purchased the serger so she is looking forward to learning as much as she can from books.

Basic Serging
The title says it all and this is a very good book to get the beginner up and going. The pictures are absolutely terrific. The photos of the stitches is essential to a beginner. A lot of thought must have gone into what to put in this book. This is now in my sewing room, right next to the sewing desk for easy reach!

Good for project ideas but just OK for beginner sergers
I bought this and another book along with my new serger. I was new to serging and a bit intimidated. I read both of my books and the manual before touching the machine. Quite honestly, I didn't find this book very helpful in learning my machine and in getting up and running on it, but I really like some of the projects in it. If you want a good book to help you with your first serger get: The Complete Serger Handbook by Chris James. Very helpful.

Bought to help me with my new serger
I've been sewing for over 30 years and just this Christmas I bought my first serger, well of course I needed some help learning to use it. This book has great pictures, easy to read instructions and easy to follow drawings. Lovely home deco projects in back. I would recommend this book to beginners, intermediate and advanced sewers.

No Bored Grandma Crafts Inside
I haven't even been through it all but I love it already! So many great projects for me to try...I cannot wait! Easy to follow and informative. Up to date projects, not those bored grandma crafts you see in some books that are just hideous. I have been enjoying reading and learning.

Easy to understand text for those learning to sew with a serger.
When I first bought my serger (overlocker), I was gobsmacked. Not a single part of it was anything like my standard sewing machine and the manual did not help matters. In ordering this book from Amazon, I was quickly able to learn to master my serger and after just 4 months, I am already confident in making quality clothing and repairs.

maybe useful but disappointing
I bought this book just after having learned the basics of serging, because I hoped to improve what i had found in the manual.I wish i had bought that before, since this would have been helpful just to learn how to start with it.Indeed, this book is quite aimed to beginners and I didn't find many techniques which weren't mentioned in the manual or hadn't figured out by myself. The book is illustrated with colourful pictures, often quite inspiring but mainly aimed to creative home sewing. I hoped to find more help towards fashion (i.e. garments') sewing. What is worse in this book, anyway, is that technical illustrations are often useless: for instance, I believe in the beginning there should have been closeout pictures to help identifying the serger parts. Instead, there's only a half page picture of the serger as a whole, with numbers to identify parts which are so far and small that you may hardly see them. The same is with the part about troubleshooting stitches. While in the beginning the author advises to use different colors for each thread, to help spotting potential problems, all the pictures are made with single color stitches and you really cannot tell the difference between "lower looper tension too high" and "upper looper tension too loose".Many other explanations, both in the foundations and the patterns' parts, should be illustrated step by step in a book which tells you what a serger is. Instead, technical drawings are few and unclear and the larger part of the pattern is written and not illustrated. Most of the pictures have a great graphic impact but are of little help in explaining techniques.
