Very detailed and valuable!

Very well written. I took a course in college that really piqued my curiosity about Northern Indian Ragas, and was left wanting more. This book is very well researched and well written, and makes sense of the philosophies and portrays the theory behind it as best it can using western music theory terms. Well worth the buy if you're interested.

Danielou, a brilliant scholar and writer, has succeeded in explaining the techical and artistic elements of Indian Raga in terms easily accessible to the western mind. This book is indispensible to those westerners who wish to learn about raga.

It doesn't have diagram pictures of ragas , ragasr mmentioned only in staff notation so thus book is useless for those who cant read staff notations.

Excellent review about ragas for someone who already has a background and understand what it is about. The author is one of the best references about the matter in Occident

Extensive notes on the ragas and the various feelings they are meant to evoke. Lots of nice little musical snippets to learn how to use the various elements of North Indian music.

Biased and at times totally inaccurate book on the historical elements

This is the book that suits every one requirement those who wants to learn raga with every subtle detail. from beginner to professional level. This is my personal experience that after purchasing the book I thought that, I ordered wrong book from beginner view of perspective. Since the composition is shown in treble clef style. But the way of explanation by the author in this book is awesome. waiting for second volume...

The worst book I have ever seen. Don't purchase this book please. It is the wastage of money. Nothing written regarding the Ragas.
