have been using this Casio scientific calculator for 4 years and it still works perfectly. The accuracy is spot on, and the calculator quality is excellent with smooth buttons and a clear display. It is lightweight and portable, so easy to carry every day. In 4 years, I only had to change the battery once after 3 years, which shows the long battery life. 100% authentic Casio product and definitely value for money. Best choice for students and professionals.

I've been using this Casio product for a while now, and I’m really happy with it. The build quality is solid, and it feels durable. It’s easy to use and comes with all the features you'd expect. I have always been a calculator fanatic and i have tried to keep up with the latest models from brands, and trust me , being a student who uses this on a daily basis you wont find a better opinion than this. For far too long i have been looking for a calculator with a higher resolution that also gets solutions solved in the least amount of keypesses, and after taking long enough Casio has come up with some good models (But as of now this is the BEST) Sure, there are more better models out there. But for an average student who literally cant use programming calculators (as it might be misused) and touchscreen calculators (which are way beyond a students budget). i might say this is the BEST VALUE-FOR-MONEY calculator out there! This calculator is specifically designed for a high school student to a Postgrad (Well,others can also use it too) As said, this calculator is SLIM for the amount of functions it has, it is VERY FAST in doing BIG CALCULATIONS and has a good chip, it is NON-PROGRAMMABLE (which can be used in schools and colleges), it has GREAT BUILD QUALITY, the battery is RECHARGEABLE (you don't have to recharge,it gets charged by even the slightest light,even your mobile screen) Its pretty EASY TO USE as all the functions are either printed on it in different colours, and the GUI(Graphical User Interface) is easy to understand. I would have given it 7 STARS if i could but this is as far as i can get. (It also has that CARBON-FIBERISH racing design so you can impress your classmates with it) -------------UPDATE---------After 6 Months---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Okay, i expected this calculator to be good but not so good! I have lost its cover (whoops!) and even after that the keys are showing no signs of being mashed and the printing has not worn off. The White color has become dull. (probably because i use it near a dusty place) Even after dropping the calculator so many times there seems to be no major dent and the parts havent cracked (the plastic parts) The battery has never been replaced (as i have done with the constant use with other calculators) its hard to find out the cons of this calculator as there isint any.

-------- TLDR: -------- Rating:5/5 ~Buy it if you are already used to Casio ~Try TI or Sharp if you are not. -------------------------------------------------- Disclaimer: ---------------- This is my review of Casio's newest solar powered scientific calculator for students which was released after the FX 991 ES Plus. This is going to be quite a long review, so sit back and read it patiently. I hope it gives you an informed view of this calculator. I have used models from all the scientific calculator lineups which Casio released in the last two decades. For this review, I'll compare the earlier versions FX 991 W, FX-991 MS, FX 991 ES and the FX 991 ES Plus, with the FX 991 EX, and list my experiences below: [I have put my thoughts on alternatives from other brands in the conclusion below, check it out] Buttons: ----------- From the moment you pick the calculator up, the first thing you will notice is that the buttons are slightly different than the current models. They are now square much like the W and TL models so they don't wiggle around in the case as much as they used to like in the ES versions. The touch feel of the material is also slightly different, it somehow feels slightly better to touch and operate. Their placement is also slightly different to ES and the MS versions, but the main setting is the same, so you will find yourself at home. One thing I would like to add is that they have removed the text in the shroud which contained the list of constants and the conversion table. The shroud is completely blank in the EX. Screen: ---------- The natural textbook display screen which was introduced in the ES models gets an upgrade, It now utilizes a higher resolution 192×63 dot display and can now support more lines of text.This is clearly the best feature of the EX. Even Casio's direct competitors Sharp and TI don't have such screens[more on that later] on their current competing models. This enables better organization of menus and its also able to display equations and matrices and other stuff like integrals much better. It utilizes more lines. While this is all well and good, it is not protected like the MS model. So when you are touching the screen you are directly touching the display panel unlike in the MS. Processing power & speed: --------------------------------------- The processor inside has been upgraded in order to handle the higher res screen and one of the benefits of that are faster calculations. This may not be apparent if you only do basic calculations. But if you are someone who regularly does complex calculations like calculus in your calculator, then you will appreciate it. Here is a video demonstrating exactly that, where the EX is ~7-10 times faster than the ES in certain calculations which itself is much faster than the MS: [...] Durability: ------------- Next in line is the durability. The best in terms of durability were the W & TL models. They felt really solid in the hand, and the shroud was really strong, it didn't bend as easily, I mean it would take considerably more force. The shroud locked in place perfectly, the ridge of the shroud ran the entire length of the calculator and hence the calculator felt unbreakable once it was in place. The MS version is on par with them. It actually had a shield for the screen as well where the display panel isn't directly exposed. But unlike the MS, the ES and ES plus were both a huge downgrade from the MS & W models in terms of durability. They didn't feel as solid as the W or the MS, and bent very easily. The shroud didn't attach properly because the ridge was much smaller and it would add no support to the calculator when attached. The durability of the paint is another question and the ES models were a disappointment in this regard as well. The EX is somewhere in between the MS and ES, which is a good thing because it is a step up from the ES. The shroud is still a step down from the W & TL models as well, but its a bit stronger and locks much better. The front panel now has a black textured plastic material which is different than the white painted ES models. On the ES models, the paint on the front panel would simply just fade to grey color of the plastic after a while due to the scratches. This was a non issue in the MS, W and TL models, and the EX is following suit. The durability of the paint on the buttons is another story, and it will take a bit longer to test that. --------------------------------- Finally the Conclusion: --------------------------------- Its in two parts, read those which are applicable to you: Conclusion for those who are already familiar with Casio's scientific calculators: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Adding all this up, its an upgrade in function and form over the ES models, but durability is still not where it needs to be. Still, I firmly believe Casio's attempt this time deserves 5 stars. In the Casio India website, MS costs 750, ES is 900, and the EX is 1150. Street prices are ~450, ~750 & ~950 if you find a good deal for them. So is it worth the upgrade over your existing calculator? Yes, and no. To me, not really. I still don't have any problem using my trusty old 350 TL which is the battery powered version of the FX 991 W. I am one of those people who doesn't need calculators for their speed or functions as much. I need certain conversions and constants, yes. But I don't do full blown matrices and stuff in it. I can see it being useful for engineering students though. Anyways, don't get it in the hopes of solving all your calculus and other complex stuff for you. If you are really looking to solve stuff like that all the time with your calculator, then you would be better served by getting a graphing calculator. Who is this for? Students who are already familiar with Casio calculators and are currently doing courses like Engineering where they need to do matrices & equations. Those who find the ES models useful, but have somehow broken or lost their calculators. Alternatives: MS - for those who simply need a few conversions and constants, because its a lot cheaper and has better build quality. Graphing calculators - for those who need to solve complex things all the time, some have advanced features like save files to USB and so on. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Conclusion for those who have no history with Casio's scientific calculators: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For you guys, I would recommend you to NOT get this calculator or any scientific calculator from Casio. The main reason is that their scientific calculators have a flaw. They don't remember the history previous calculations after power off. This is very annoying. You are also unable to use previous values like how you can in competing calculators after its switched off. You will really realize how this convenience pays off especially in examinations when you switch on the calculator, and can jump to any previous calculation and use the values from them just like that. It could save a few minutes or a whole lot depending on how much those few minutes can mean, like say if you are on the border line of passing, then losing a few minutes could end up as a failure in the result. I recommend you to get the Texas Instruments TI-36X Pro or the Sharp EL-W516X. Both of which are excellent calculators, and don't have this limitation. For students starting out and who are not accustomed to Casio, are best candidates to get them. When I was in college there was no online shopping and we didn't have all these products available, so everyone got Casio from their stationary store. Its not the same for kids now. There is another reason. If you think about it, Sharp and TI have not updated their Scientific calculator lineup in ~5 years. So they are bound to release an update sooner or later as a response to Casio's new version. So if you are already familiar with their setup, it will be great cause you will be at home when they update their lineup. Currently, Casio's FX 991 EX has only 2 major advantages, it is newer than the other two, so it has a better display and a better processor. Hence it calculates faster. You can partially compensate for the drawback by storing each value in the memory, but there's still no way to check the earlier calculations so you can't verify them after power loss. In India, the TI 36X Pro is readily available for a little cheaper online compared to the Casio, and the Sharp is not yet readily available everywhere. http://www.amazon.in/Texas-Instruments-TI-36-Scientific-Calculator/dp/B004NBZB2Y/ Here its listed at INR 930 as of today. I would recommend you to get the TI at this point because of its better build quality and more robust nature compared to the Sharp, and wider use in places like the States. ----------------- Bottom line: ----------------- So there you have it, ~buy it if you are already used to Casio ~try TI or Sharp if you are new to this. -------- Trivia: -------- It was launched on the 27th of November, 2014 and released here around a year ago 2015. [...] Different regions may get slightly different models depending on the education system and the rules for public exams, and cost constraints and maybe other parameters like the features in competing calculators in that region and so on. Japan's version of the FX 991 EX is called FX-JP900-N and it has over 700 functions compared to the FX 991 EX's 552. ---------- Extras: ---------- If you've made it till here, I'll provide you some more of my views. Read on, it will be worth it. When I was in Engineering I never had a calculator till I completed first year. I used to copy a lot though, writing formulas on the hands and desks and asking friends for answers and so on. But after I started using calculators, I found that it was very easy to scribble formulas on the calculator's back side, on pencil, and use it when you cant remember the difficult parts. This was very effective because it was not directly visible to those passing by, because of the low contrast between the lead and dark grey body of the calculator. You needed to be in a specific angle to the incident light to see the reflection of the light on the lead deposited by the pencil. This was very convenient, with the TL and W versions. After that the MS was a bit more lighter grey, so it was more visible, but still not that much. After you were done, one wipe was all that was needed to conceal the evidence. The ES and ES Plus were similar as well, but the EX has a white colored back and shroud. There's no way you can get away with writing on the calculator now. It should be easier to conceal chits though, I mean if they're both white. But thinking about it, the MS and W versions were excellent at this as well, and a chit cut to size could be concealed perfectly. So guys, this is another reason to reconsider your choice of calculator. ;)

Users on a very tight budget, as it is priced at a premium compared to basic scientific calculators.
