The Japanese Pottery Handbook , first published by Kodansha in 1979, has become a classic, beloved by anyone interested in pottery for its practical, step-by-step approach, and homespun charm. Now, thirty-five years since its publication, authors Penny Simpson and Lucy Kitto have refreshed their work, expanding and adding to the material, re-designing the pages, and re-drawing many of the delightful illustrations. The book has a cleaner, more modern look, yet retains the simple, friendly, and distinctively Japanese sensibility of the original. In addition to the new layout and drawings, the authors have tweaked the text and expanded several sections (including the discussion of underglazing and overglazing, and the Tea Ceremony and its utensils). There’s also a new page showing different types of brushes; and the Information chapter has been updated to include websites and recent books. The book is a manual to the way pots are made in Japan, their forms, and their decorations. The authors give a thorough account of both traditional and modern techniques and also describe in detail tools, materials, glazes, and the setup of workshops and kilns. Lucy Kiitto’s sprightly drawings infuse each page with life and clarity. Pottery terms and expressions are listed with their Japanese equivalents, and the new edition keeps the bi-lingual text, making it easier for the exchange of ideas between foreign students studying in Japan and Japanese potters. Review: A good foundation for technical Japanese ceramic building - It’s a really lovely, almost quaint craft book. Mostly informational but also techniques. If anything this would be a good foundation for anyone studying the influence Japan has had on ceramics in American arts and crafts. And also would be very useful for someone who might have limited Japanese ability but is maybe doing ceramics things in Japan. Review: Simple Approach, All Aspects - I like this book. Simple is good, if you believe in this then you will appreciate this book. Bridges the gap of language and terms with English and Japanese and clarifies everything you can imagine about Japanese Pottery. Not deep explanations, a guide to go further.

Very Detailed Book
First, be aware this book was written in the 1970s, so yes, it is dated. However, that's a plus as well as a minus. There's a wealth of data here about Japanese traditional pottery. It's a delight! How much of this is still true, I do not know. But it's a real treasure for students of traditional Asian pottery.

Good, not great.
My mom is big into pottery so I got her this book for Christmas. We have a lot of Japanese pottery at home from my grandparents, and thought it would be cool if she could learn new techniques. It's a very informative book and mom thought it was interesting, but there aren't really any pictures in the book which was disappointing. There were a lot of drawn diagrams that seemed helpful, and I haven't seen a lot of other pottery books that talk about Japanese pottery as in depth as this book does. So overall it is a good book, I was just hoping for some more pictures.

The perfect reference guide for pottery in Japan.
The perfect English-Japanese reference from logically categorized objects to chemical names of glazes, I can easily look up the proper English terms and Japanese terms pictorially and chemical compound. This edition has added a map of Japan with notable pottery townships and recommended addresses.

Book is very informative and inspiring.
Great book - bought as a gift and they loved it. The inside of the book isn't a high quality paper but is more I keeps no with the content. Also full of lots of nice little drawings. Please note none of the pictures inside the book are in colour. Book is very informative and inspiring.
