CLASSIC BROADCAST RECORDINGS FROM 1967 1967 was a difficult year for The Beach Boys. The Smile sessions were not released as an album for a variety of reasons, and although some cuts were re-recorded and, along with the single version of Good Vibrations , released on the September 1967 album Smiley Smile - which despite eliciting positive critical and commercial responses abroad, was the first real commercial failure for the group in the US. The problems the band were experiencing at this time were largely due to the ill-health and drug problems of main composer Brian, who, despite never again reverting to his pre-66 levels of potency, would continue to write many quite superb songs, as indeed would other members of The Beach Boys. And while shows the group played in the latter months of 1967 were not exactly replete with new material, Wild Honey and the aforementioned Smiley Smile both provided numbers which were performed at this time and were received with enthusiasm. This CD, the perfect partner to the recent Sunshine Tomorrow compilation, featuring as it does a plethora of broadcast recordings from November 1967 (none of which replicate the tracks on the aforementioned collection) goes some way to illustrating that even during their toughest era, The Beach Boys remained a dynamic live attraction.

A fine selection.
This selection comes from four performances over a seven day period (17th -23rd November 1967) in small venues in the USA. The group might have been slightly under-rehearsed or just in a playful mood as there are some interjections or improvisations compared to their normal note-for-note outings. This adds to the enjoyment and allows noticeable differences where the same song has been picked from more than one source. The 62 mins run time is acceptable although one can always want more. The recording quality is medium/high for live shows of that era.

Nice one
If you have the digital Wild Honey live tracks, than this is an excerpt of those recordings. No new concert live recordings. Besides that it is a decent live recording from those 1967 concerts.

So just in case you don't know, after a certain period of time if not officially released, music goes out of copyright, which means it can be released without the consent of the artists or record company. This unfortunately means the sound quality of the music usually suffers, but not so much in the case of “Lonely Return”, if the sound quality of the live tracks from “Sunshine tomorrow” is Ten, then “Lonely Return” would be about an eight, which is pretty good for one these live radio broadcast.Consisting of songs from four shows (1-6 Detroit 17/11/67, 7-12 Boston 23/11/67, 13-16 New York 21/11/67 & 17-20 Pittsburgh 22/11/67).By the time in their career, The Beach Boys were already seasoned performers, with some great renditions of their hits & with a few obscurer tracks thrown it, plus some great banter in between the songs, which shows that the band were still clearly enjoying the concerts even though 1967 was such as disastrous year when it came to record sales. If you enjoy the bands live shows from this period of their career then “Sunshine Tomorrow” would be an essential purchase, but “Lonely Return” comes in a close second.
