## Overview

The Royer Labs SF-12 is a high-performance small-element stereo ribbon microphone designed for true stereophonic recording. It boasts high SPL capabilities, extremely low residual noise, and a robust design that withstands environmental factors, making it an ideal choice for professional audio applications.

## Description

Ideal for critical stereo recording, the SF-12 stereo coincident ribbon microphone combines high quality audio performance with outstanding stereo separation and imaging. It is a modern ribbon design with no audible diffraction effects or cavity resonance. An SF-12 is actually two matched ribbon microphones placed one above the other; each aimed 45 degrees from center in the classic Blumlein configuration. The frequency response is excellent regardless of the angle of sound striking the ribbons and off-axis coloration is negligible. The SF-12 utilizes two 1.8-micron ribbons, each weighing approximately 1/3 milligram and producing superb transient response. The two ribbon transducers are magnet/pole piece structures that produce a wide, uniform frequency response with no substantial peaks or dips. The case is ingot iron and forms part of the magnetic return circuit, an effective system with low leakage flux which accounts for the relatively high sensitivity in a trim package.

Review: Expensive, but with good reason. - I've had mine from before Royer got involved; mine was built by the original designer, the late Bob Speiden, in the early 90s. It was recalibrated by Bob a few years after I got it, then updated by Royer Labs. I've pretty much retired from recording now but I still use it from time to time. I did mostly classical music and found it superb on just about anything I put it in front of- choral, piano, brass, etc. It's also very highly regarded as an overhead drum mic for jazz. I've also used it over percussion like marimbas and xylophones. It does require good mic preamps (I have Millennia Media with 2 dedicated ribbon inputs) but given good pres and of course good source material it is superb- smooth, natural and detailed without harshness and of course the imaging is razor sharp. For larger ensembles, the sound can be opened up with a pair of flanking omnis. (To be fair, I also have some Schoeps condensers and there s nothing wrong with them, either.) At this price, it's certainly not a "project studio" mic but a first-class professional tool. But if you can pony up the cash, it will not disappoint.
