Reliable, Lightweight, and Field-Proven Water Filtration System
Reliable, Lightweight, and Field-Proven Water Filtration SystemThe Sawyer Squeeze Water Filtration System has earned its reputation for good reason—it’s one of the most reliable, versatile, and packable filters you can bring on the trail. I’ve used mine for camping, backpacking, and emergency prep, and it consistently delivers clean, great-tasting water without fail. The system includes two 32-ounce collapsible pouches, the squeeze filter, adapters, and a backflush syringe for cleaning. The setup is simple: fill a pouch with water, attach the filter, and either drink directly or squeeze into another container. You can also hook it into a gravity setup or hydration pack using the included adapters, which gives you flexibility depending on how you travel or camp.Performance-wise, it’s outstanding. The 0.1-micron filter removes bacteria, protozoa, and microplastics, making it safe for nearly all freshwater sources. Flow rate is strong when the filter is clean, and maintenance is as easy as backflushing after each trip to restore flow. The filter itself is incredibly durable—I’ve filtered dozens of liters through it without any decline in performance. The only weak point is the included pouches—they’re lightweight but can wear out or split after repeated folding or hard squeezing. I replaced mine with sturdier bottles, and the filter works perfectly with standard 28mm threaded water bottles, which makes it even more convenient. What I appreciate most is the peace of mind this system offers. Whether I’m drawing from a stream in the mountains or filling up from a questionable spigot while traveling, I know I’m covered. And at just a few ounces, it’s easy to justify keeping one in every emergency or travel kit.Bottom line: A proven, field-tested filtration system that’s lightweight, easy to use, and dependable for both backcountry and emergency use. Keep a backup pouch or two, and this will serve you for years.

Best Water Filter for Hiking
This is by far the best water filter for hiking I know about. I tried a lot of filters including the new Sawyer Micro filter and some hand pump filters. This filter is superior on flow rate and even on maintenance compared to all the filters I tested and have seen in the field. You need to maintain this filter to maintain a good flow rate. This is done by back flushing the filter with clean water. Don't use the syringe to back flush because this will take forever and isn't really effective. The syringe is just 50 mL which is 20 times smaller in volume than using a water bag or bottle. I recommend using the Sawyer coupling device and a Evernew (0.9 liter) bag or a 1-Liter Smartwater bottle to back flush the filter. The threads on these bottles are compatible with the coupling device. The pressure you can obtain back flushing is much higher than the pressure you get using a syringe. Because of this higher pressure and larger water volume you'll dislodge more contaminants from the filter.I don't recommend relying on the Sawyer bags. They are light but they will break in the field after a lot of use. I recommend using the Evernew 0.9-Liter or 2-Liter bags instead of the Sawyer bags to force water through the filter. You'll get a higher pressure and faster flow rate using the smaller bag but you'll have to refill it more. The Evernew bags will last so much longer than the Sawyer bags.In my tests I saw a flow rate around 1.6 liters a minute using the Evernew bags which is faster than most pump type filters. What I like about using the Sawyer filter is the lack of moving parts. The only problem I have had in the field after thousands of miles is the Sawyer bag leaking. After replacing the Sawyer bag with the Evernew bag or Smartwater bottle (grocery store water bottle) I have not had any issues. If your Sawyer filter water filter flow rate slows even after back flushing consider soaking in vinegar (slightly acidic) to remove any mineral deposits (slightly basic) that have formed inside the filter. See Sawyer tutorial video. I did this and it brought my flow rate from 0.2 liters a minute back up to about 1.5 liters a minute.I should emphasize the slightly lighter Sawyer Micro filter isn't worth it. The extra weight of this Sawyer squeeze provide much better flow rates and is so much easier to maintain in the field. Thank you Sawyer for creating such a great filter.

Great value, easy to use, functional, compact. Always has worked.
Water filters are hard to review as how do you really know without scientific testing (to some extent) that they really work? All I can say is that I've used this many times on the trail, and unscientifically, I've never been sick. It's small, portable and easy to use. The ability to use store bought water bottles is just a really good idea so you don't have to worry about some proprietary size for the unfiltered water bottle source (or the filtered water bottle, but I don't have to worry about that, see below).I did read about the washer at the bottom sometimes falling out, so I bought some spare washers and have one taped to the body just in case. Additionally if you filter water with the tops screwed in, you'll find it harder with the air pressure to keep filtering if you just don't leave it on a gravity feed. I attached a length of tubing that falls into the open neck of a water bottle and that solved that kind of problem. I also have my filtered water bottle higher so that if anything breaks or unfiltered water dribbles down, unfiltered water won't be mixing with filtered water. Still really easy to use like that and gives me peace of mind.I really love this water filter. The only slight negative? Well just put it in your sleeping bag on freezing nights as it could damage the filter if the water freezes. A solution for Sawyer could be to have some sort of top that seals it so water in the filter can't leak through (I sleep with mine in a zip lock for this reason).

Fast, durable, compact, lightweight
Bought this for a family backpacking trip and love it. I didn't keep track, but likely filtered 30-40 liters for our 3 day trip, and it showed no signs of slowing down. I only have one 3 day trip with this filter, but so far it's easily the best filter I've had. I've used hand pump filters, chemical treatment, boiling water, other gravity filters, and this is by far the best. It filters fast even with just gravity. If needed the extra squeeze speeds things up (something my last gravity filter would not allow). Most of the time we just hung up my filter bag walked away and came back when it was done. When I got home I back flushed (also something my last gravity filter did not allow) and bleached per the instructions. It was easy and clearly had some affect as the backwash water was quite dirty. With respect to the filter I really have nothing bad to say about it. For $40 it's a great deal even without the accessories. If I had to be not picky, the only thing I could see making some improvement is some of the accessories.I didn't have any issues with the bags, but others have reported issues, and I've had issues with similar style flasks in the past. I ended up using a 3 liter flask from my previous Katadyne befree and let gravity filter water straight into my 3 liter MSR hydration bladder. This worked great! The fittings that came with it worked just ok. I like to have more hose, so again I stole some from one of my previous filters. I would have gotten by just fine with what was provided, but to get hands off filtering from one pouch to the next, I modified the setup a bit.Last, is a problem I have thats not unique to this filter. Trying to fill a pouch from questionable stagnant water is challenging, the water usually needs some kind of prefiltering (bandana), and needs to be scooped out. The is one of the few scenarios where a hand pump filter with a prefilter on the inlet hose wins out.Overall this is my favorite filter and expect it will be my primary filter from now on. If anything change my opinion I'll come back and update my review.

Simple, Reliable, and Trail-Tested
I’ve used my Sawyer Squeeze on dozens of outdoor adventures. With simple regular back-flushing after each trip, it has performed flawlessly every trip. Compared to the pump systems my friends carry into the backcountry, the Sawyer is much lighter weight and super easy to use. Fill the pouch from any water source, thread on the filter, and you've got clean drinking water in seconds. There is no complicated setup and no fuss when you're tired from hours of hiking or at the end of a long day on the trail. My only gripe is that the included squeeze bag can be a little finicky to hold and roll as you filter. I’ve solved this by re-using a disposable water bottle with threads that match the filter’s threads. My family and I have also used the smaller version of the Sawyer, but we much prefer the full-sized Sawyer Squeeze because the flow is so much better. My Sawyer is as essential to my adventure kit as water is to life. I wouldn’t take a trip into the wilderness without it.The Sawyer Squeeze is probably the most outstanding filter out there, and I highly recommend it to any avid hiker or backpacker.

Free Water for a Lifetime
5 camping trips later ZERO ISSUES, muddy water may require back flushing to keep the flow going for sure, but it WORKS. and that's the key thing. rivers provide delicious tasting water which is now free from 99.999999% of harmful stuff thanks to a tiny Squeeze that weighs very little and takes even less space. Just don't store it outside your tent in freezing temps or hit it (hard) on a rock, and it should last a lifetime.

Great Update to the Gold Standard in Backpacking Filters
If you are not aware of what this is, it is a very lightweight (3 oz) portable water filter that is rated as 0.1 micron absolute. I do not have any specialty in that field, but the bottom line is that other than viruses, you do not have to worry about anything in your water supply. For those of us in North America, that means we can basically drink from any natural source as long as it's been filtered through the Sawyer. This model includes a single, beefier 1L pouch that you can fill up at a stream or lake, and then roll (or squeeze) the water through the filter. I find this sufficient as a backup or when going solo, but generally bring a 2L soda bottle instead for groups of up to 4. This way, I can fill lake water and then filter into Nalgenes for everyone. This requires no pumping, it's a one-man job, setup and clean up are non-existent (unlike other filters). It beats out pretty much everything for simplicity except for the gravity filters, which require lots of setup time and a good set of trees. The flow rate is quick, about 1L a minute in the field, possibly faster but your hands may tire. It was trivial to find a soda bottle whose threads screwed into the Sawyer (I bought some no name brand at the local grocery store for 90 cents). I occasionally drink from the filter directly, and can filter water equally well on a canoe as dry land.Rated at 1 Million Gallons before the filter needs a change... well I haven't gotten there and I doubt I ever will. Backwashing this with the provided medical syringe is easy and I only do it at home (no trips taken that are 5d+).The main concern I have with this is that the clear cap for the clean water spout may eventually pop off and be lost in my backpack. You can tell by the pictures that it's only held on by a bit of friction -- it's pretty tight on my model and I haven't been worried, but I can see that the day will come that it's a problem. I've seen people replace the cap with better models from disposable water bottles (Smart Water has a flip top). And that underscores the brilliance in its design... it's standardized to water bottle threads so basically you can find replacement parts for everything without ever purchasing from Sawyer. So in conclusion, go buy this. There's really nothing else out there that compares.

A must-have for hiking, camping, or travel
I’ve been using the Sawyer SP129 PointOne filter system on a few camping trips, and I’m really happy with it so far. It’s lightweight, efficient, and gives peace of mind when you’re not sure about water quality. What I love:Filtration power: It filters down to 0.1 micron, which means it removes bacteria, protozoa, and other nasty stuff. It’s amazing how clear the water is after filtering.Easy to use: You just fill the squeezable pouch, squeeze it through the filter, and drink or store it. No fussing with pumps or hoses.Light and portable: Weighs next to nothing. I toss it in my backpack without feeling it.Good flow rate: Even after a few uses, it still flows well. Doesn’t clog up quickly in my experience (I rinse it as recommended).Durable design: It seems rugged enough to handle rough handling. I’ve dropped it and used it on rock surfaces and it’s holding up.Things to keep in mind:You’ll need to backflush it regularly to maintain flow. It’s easy though, just use the included syringe and good clean water. It works best with relatively clear water. If the water is super muddy, it slows down (but that’s true of almost all filters). You need to plan your water stops – it doesn’t carry huge volumes itself, just filters what you supply it.Verdict:If you’re into hiking, camping, or traveling in places where water safety is uncertain, this is a smart, reliable choice. It gives you confidence that you’re drinking safer water. Highly recommend if you want something effective, simple, and durable.
