The Stedi-Rest is used in combination with a mahl stick (sold separately) to steady the hand for detailed brush strokes that require precision. 10 conveniently spaced slots enable you to position your mahl stick at the angle needed. The Stedi-Rest is made from neutral grey high impact plastic with a universal clamp that attaches to the left side or right side of your canvas frame. It works equally well for right or left-handed use. The universal clamp can grasp any substrate 1.88in (4.77cm) wide or less. 16.5 inch length and 0.20 pounds. It adjusts nicely so you have a rest even when working low on your painting. I had no trouble attaching it. The best part is it holds anything with a stopper on the end. I did not need to order an expensive Mahl and instead bought a $6.00 curtain rod at a discount store to use as a mahl. Now all I have to do is finish the painting by Father's Day!!! Review: Flimsy - I gave this device 3 stars because of the concept. This product is made of plastic and is flimsy. When I put my mahl stick in the top 3 and bottom 3 grooves, the device bows in. This also isn’t conducive to use on a gallery wrap canvas that is more than 3/4 to an inch deep. Definitely not on a 1.5 inch deep canvas. For standard size canvas it will work just fine. I would suggest putting something flat and sturdy between the set screw and the canvas to keep the end of the screw from damaging your canvas. Again, I do love the concept.

The best studio tool

Flimsy

This was a good purchase as it works well to steady a hand on a canvas.

It works!
At first, I thought the screw was too short to secure it to my canvas (which is only about 1/2" thick), but it did. If you don't rest the other end of your mahl stick on the protruding bottom shelf of your easel, it will flex down and touch your painting. As long as you do that, your hands are free to hold a brush in one and a palette in the other! I noticed some were bothered by the fact that it's plastic. First of all, that is in the product description, so don't buy it if you don't want plastic. It doesn't bother me as it is lightweight and doesn't detract from its functionality. Tomorrow, I paint!
