Emergency Navigation Card Misc. Supplies – January 1, 2010

Incredible amount of useful content for what is basically one sheet of plastic-coated cardboard. Most textbooks take a great many pages to cover the same material.

Way, way too busy to try and follow the instructions on the card. Maybe with the book, someone can figure it out. Definitely a waste of your money. I spend 30-45 minutes attempting to apply it but finally gave up and tossed the Card on a stack of old books and haven't bothered to look at it since. Save your bucks.

The "Emergency Navigation Card" is a laminated two sided sheet of the essential information I would want if I was stranded, lost, or otherwise location challenged and my modern means of navigation were disabled. It contains, steering by the sun, How to check a compass, finding he North Pole, How to find boat speed, star declinations for 27 North Hemisphere stars and many southern stars, finding latitude, latitude by Polaris, emergency almanac for the sun, a N(x) table, and an arc to time table. The directions are simple and clear. The card is well laid out.This is information that should be at the fingertips of anyone venturing out of sight of land, or even out in the wilderness on land. Very valuable bit to have on board.

I think the product has a lot of potential. I have downloaded "Cartes de Ciel", which is a program for the night sky with the constellations. I can visualize better the interaction with night navigation without being on a boat. I do have a sextant, and visualize the calculations with the sextant. Too bad there is not a complete package which could include - (a) Nautical Almanac. (b) Sextant. (c) CD with computer program with night constellations.(d) The Emergency naviagtion Chart. I find that I did have to order or find all this to get started and understand navigation. I do have a good compass, and have purchased a book to help study maps with a compass. All this adds to learning about navigation.

Card is replete with a plethora of important information in a succinct and straight forward format. Easily carried in Navigation notebook.

I hope I never have to use the card, but it is nice to know that I have it when all else fails. The card covers the subject thoroughly enough for emergency use.

Have no idea about content as it was a present - but item received was dog eared , bent and tatty as though it had been used before.Can't blame packaging as that was pristine - so it must be the lack of quality check by Amazon.Too much effort to return.
