A Great Tool
This book is very helpful. As we see markers we are marking them with a date in the book. We are finding lots of markers are not listed because there are just too many. Also Texas needs to put markers back up when they are missing. We find a lot just not there. This is a fun hobby.

Good book but missing a lot of markers
East Texas. I have been away from this area for 20 years and now have a new book. There are a lot of markers from the old days that are still in the same places that do not appear in the new book. There is a massacre site near my hometown with three markers side by side along the highway and they are omitted. I love the book as a whole but am disappointed about the ones that didn't make the cut.

Does NOT have Historical Marker numbers
This edition of Why Stop does not have any of the numbers for the Texas Historical Markers. If you intend to buy this and use it to read what is historical in a particular area while driving, you will be sadly disappointed. Instead spend $2.99 to buy the Texas Historical Marker app.I purchased this as a gift for my husband prior to a planned road trip. We got in the car all set to use the book only to discover that it is organized by the name of the town and NONE of the entries relate to the numbers you can see on the markers on the highway signs. I thought an earlier edition had the numbers, but it got lost in a move so I bought this expecting the same thing. Don't waste your money!I gave this two stars instead of one because the information that is in the book is interesting and probably an accurate transcription of the actual marker. We read about the areas where we were, but who takes the time to measure "one mile West of town," while driving through? Buy the app instead.

A Great Travel Companion
I like this book and bought it as a travel companion. The Index is broken into the names on the markers and also by county which makes it easy for locating markers. I keep a highlighter and pen with me and as I stop for each marker I catalog the date I visited the site in the book.I bought other copies and have given them as gifts. Each recipient so far has had a very positive response to the book. I feel any way to learn about and appreciate history should be taken advantage of and this updated book is a fun and easy way to do that! Don't leave this book on a shelf! Keep it in your car and begin your search today! Learn about Texas history! Remember it and tell others! Make a game out of it! Texas is rich with history! The markers are there to commemorate sites of historical significance. This book will assist you in doing that!Texas now has more than 15,000 markers. Not all are mentioned in this book. The book is focused on well traveled U.S. Highways and State Highways and City Markers. The markers you find along your journey that are not mentioned in your book can be a bonus for you as you discover them!I highly recommend this book.

Exploring Texas History
I purchased the 6th Edition and I grab this book as a resource on any day trip I head out on. Big disappointment that only a small portion of the thousands of historical markers in Texas are listed in the book.Would be great if there was an on-line source for every marker; hmmm, I need to look!!!

A Wonderful History Guide
This is a great book for anyone interested in Texas history. It reproduces the contents of the roadside historical markers. Since it is organized by location, you might very well see some fascinating markers that are only a short distance off your usual highways. Since new markers are added constantly, every few years I get a new copy for the car and move the old car copy to my library. And there may be some terrific historical sites very near your home that you never noticed.
