The Showstopper Unreleased
This three disc DVD is a match compilation of unreleased matches from Shawn Michaels career. In reality one match had been released before but the majority is brand new footage. Shawn Michaels appears between some of the matches to link them together and reflect on his career along with showing us what he's doing now in NXT. Unlike a lot of these 'Unreleased' collections WWE puts out most of the matches on this DVD do have commentary.Shawn Michaels and Tim Horner vs. Hector and Chavo Guerrero - This was a very short match that was mainly just to showcase the Guerreros. It wasn't anything special but it was interesting to see Shawn so early on in his career and the match wasn't boring.Shawn Michaels vs. Jake "The Snake" Roberts - This was really just a squash match although Shawn did get in some quick pinfall attempts. It showed off Shawn as an early underdog but apart from that it was just ok.The Midnight Rockers vs. "Pretty Boy" Doug Somers and "Playboy" Buddy Rose - This is a decent back and forth match. It shows that the Rockers were the better and faster team but Somers and Rose had the experience to be able to cut them off at times. It had some good action and a decisive finish. The Midnight Rockers vs. "Pretty Boy" Doug Somers and "Playboy" Buddy Rose - This rematch was for the AWA World Tag Team Championships. The match had a similar story with The Rockers being the better athletes but their opponents cutting them off and using underhanded tactics to keep The Rockers isolated. It was a better match than the previous one as it was given more time but the action was good in both. The Midnight Rockers vs. Dennis Stamp and Brian Knobbs - This wasn't the most competitive match but it was a good one to show off The Rockers' offence with. It wasn't a complete squash though and was an enjoyable little match. The Rockers vs. The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers - This was a good, competitive tag team match. The Rockers showed off their fast paced offence while the Rougeau brothers tried to slow things down and keep Shawn Michaels grounded so he couldn't make a tag. It was an entertaining match but it unfortunately had an unsatisfying finish. The Rockers vs. Demolition - This was for the WWE Tag Team Championships and it was much more competitive than I was expecting. It was a really good and exciting tag match with The Rockers' fast-paced style looking like it might be too much for their more powerful opponents at times. Demolition did manage to cut off Michaels though and take back the advantage. The finish was alright, it wasn't the best but it was at least a proper result. I really enjoyed this one.The Rockers vs. The Brain Busters - It shouldn't be a surprise that these two teams delivered a great match. For a long time The Rockers were just better than the Brain Busters, beating them at their own game. Eventually The Brain Busters came back and worked over Marty Jannetty, keeping the match competitive. Everything about this match was enjoyable from The Rockers' early dominance to The Brain Busters' veteran tactics to try and stay ahead. The finish was good too, providing us with a result but still leaving us wanting more. The Rockers vs. The Hart Foundation - This is another match that you probably won't be surprised to know is a very good match. There's some great tag team wrestling by both teams throughout the match. They felt very evenly matched, with both The Anvil and Michaels getting isolated on separate occasions. They had a good amount of time and the non-stop action was all good but the finish was disappointing, although it does make you want to see a rematch. The Rockers vs. The Orient Express - This was another good back and forth match with some good teamwork from both teams. The action was entertaining but the finish was disappointing which did hurt things a bit. It was still enjoyable though and worth including. The Rockers vs. Demolition - The titles weren't on the line for this one. This was another good match between these two teams. Demolition were more dominant this time but The Rockers still held their own and kept it from becoming a squash match. It wasn't as good or as exciting as their previous match on this DVD but it was still a good one. It was also the first match on the DVD without commentary. The Rockers vs. The Natural Disasters - This was a decent match when you consider the limitations of The Disasters. The Rockers put up a good fight against their much larger opponents. The finish worked fine and it was at least a result. It was entertaining while it lasted and I liked it more than I thought I would. The Rockers vs. Legion of Doom - This was a WWE Tag Team Championship match. Like the previous one it was good considering the limitations of The Rockers' opponent. It was enjoyable from start to finish and it had a good finish that looks like it was leading to the break-up of The Rockers.Shawn Michaels vs. Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka - This was a surprisingly decent match and the best I've ever seen from Snuka. It had decent back and forth action and it was a good example of how Michaels could make anyone look good in the ring, even someone as limited and untalented as Jimmy Snuka. It also luckily had a clean finish.Shawn Michaels vs. Mr. Perfect - Before this match we see Shawn Michaels on Piper's Pit. The match itself is for the WWE Intercontinental Championship. It was mostly good but I still found it disappointing considering who was involved. It felt like a good match was building up but then it just ended. Given five or ten more minutes this could have been much better. Also this match doesn't have commentary.Shawn Michaels and Diesel vs. The Headshrinkers - This was another match without commentary. It took a little while to get going and the finish wasn't great. There was some good action in the middle with some good teamwork by Diesel and Shawn. Overall it was a decent match but nothing special.Shawn Michaels vs. King Kong Bundy - Before this match we see Diesel and Shawn Michaels face to face before Wrestlemania XI. The match itself was a King of the Ring qualifying match. It was a pretty enjoyable match. Shawn was clearly the better athlete but Bundy had his siz and power to keep it competitive. It had a clean finish and the right amount of time.Shawn Michaels and Bret "Hitman" Hart" vs. Jacob and Eli Blu - This was a decent but basic tag team match. The simplicity of the match is made up for by the uniqueness of seeing two famous rivals team up like this. It had a clean finish but it wasn't their best work. Still enjoyable enough though. It didn't have any commentary either.Shawn Michaels, Diesel and Undertaker vs. Sycho Sid, Tatanka and Kama - This was a Six-Man Elimination match. It wasn't anything ground-breaking but there was always something going on to keep it entertaining. They were clearly working at a house show level .The eliminations weren't great but the elimination aspect of the match did help make it more interesting. I enjoyed it but it wasn't at the level of Survivor Series elimination matches or anything.Shawn Michaels vs. 1-2-3 Kid - This was a very good back and forth match. It was one of the rare times Shawn was fighting someone smaller than he is. The match had a fast pace and was very competitive. There was a small amount of outside involvement from Ted DiBiase but it didn't take anything from the match. We had very good action and a decisive finish.Shawn Michaels vs. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin - This was a WWE Championship match. It was a pretty good, technical and competitive match. These two have have better matches than this before but this one is still an enjoyable watch as these two were so good in the ring. It was from a house show so didn't have commentary but the action was good and the finish was clean.Shawn Michaels vs. Yokozuna - This was another WWE Championship match without commentary. It's the best it could really be considering the severe limitations of Yokozuna in the ring. It's not a great match but Shawn does make the match watchable. I'm sure there are far better matches they could have included but this was fine.Shawn Michaels vs. Justin Hawk Bradshaw - This wasn't for the championship. It was a basic match mostly controlled by Bradshaw. Shawn made it entertaining though. It isn't a match you really need to see but it's enjoyable enough to watch with solid action and a clean finish.Shawn Michaels vs. Vader - This was for Shawn's WWE Championship. Weirdly it was a complete squash match, something I wasn't expecting. That was disappointing because these two men could have had a pretty great match if it was competitive. Definitely the biggest disappointment on this DVD.Shawn Michaels vs. Brooklyn Brawler - Surprisingly this was a WWE Championship match. Even more surprisingly it was given more time than the match with Vader from right before it. The match was alright. Shawn was back to being a heel so he had Triple H and Chyna in his corner to get involved on his behalf. Brawler did get some pinfall attempts and the outside involvement made him look way stronger than he ever had before.Shawn Michaels vs. Rob Van Dam - This match is the first one after Shawn's return from a career-ending back injury. It's a very good back and forth match with some good psychology. Michaels targets Van Dam's leg to try and get rid of his variety of kicks and Rob focused his attack on the lower back of Michaels which had previously been injured (costing Shawn four and a half years of his career). The finish is disappointing as it's just to carry on a separate feud but the action up until that point is very good.Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho - This is a rematch from Wrestlemania 19. It was a great back and forth match that was on a similar level to their Wrestlemania match. It was full of reversals, near falls and great, competitive action. The two men looked very even throughout. There were some shenanigans towards the end but I didn't mind them, they only added to the drama of an already great match. It also had a great and decisive finish, I'm so glad they included this match.Shawn Michaels vs. Christian - This was another very good back and forth match. It was full of great, competitive action, reversals, fast paced action and convincing near falls. Tyson Tomko was in Christian's corner but he was taken out early on to make sure we got a good, clean one on one fight. The finish was satisfying and the overall match was very entertaining.Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair - This was another good match. Most of the work was made up of Flair working over Shawn's leg to set up for the figure four as Shawn tried to come back and get a quick victory over Flair. They had some entertaining action and a decisive finish in a good, enjoyable match.Shawn Michaels and Batista vs. Triple H and Edge - This was a bonus match after RAW so there was no commentary here. That also meant the wrestlers were taking a much more relaxed approach to this match than they would for a regular TV or PPV match. They spent a lot of time just having fun with the crowd which depending on your taste you'll either like or hate. There was a clean finish and once the match got started it was entertaining enough.Shawn Michaels vs. Kurt Angle - If Shawn Michaels lost this match he would be fired. It was a great, back and forth match. The action was so good, their was plenty of reversals and some convincing near-falls. The drama they built with Shawn's career being on the line and him being trapped in the ankle lock was amazing and the finish, while not completely clean was also good. I loved this match.D-Generation X vs. Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch vs. Charlie Haas and Viscera vs. The Highlanders - This is the match that has been released previously on their 2007 DX DVD and it was a Texas Tornado match which meant it was every team in the ring at once and all trying to win. However it was just a way to get back at DX so all the teams were ganging up on Shawn and Triple H for most of the match. It wasn't a very long match which I think was for the best, it was just a bit of chaos and then the finish. It was entertaining but technically not a good match.Shawn Michaels and John Cena vs. Rated RKO - This was a WWE World Tag Team Championships and for some reason it started with Rated RKO already down and exhausted, I don't know what happened there, the announcement of the match seemed to surprise Michaels and Cena too. Thankfully the match did get more competitive once Rated RKO got back into it. It was a dark match after RAW so it wasn't as good as it would have been on a televised show but it was enjoyable enough.Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho vs. Batista - This Triple Threat match was for the World Heavyweight Championship and was another RAW dark match. This one was much better quality though. Batista and Shawn wanted to get their hands on Jericho so teamed up for a while but soon ended up fighting each other too. The action was fun and entertaining and the finish was clean. It could have been better but it was still enjoyable.Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker vs. John Bradshaw Layfield and Vladmir Koslov - Undertaker and Shawn were set to face each other at Wrestlemania soon after this match. They still worked together well though for the most part in this entertaining bout. The result was clean but along with the aftermath it played a part in the Undertaker/HBK rivalry. It was overall a good, fun match. This was a really good DVD. Definitely the best of WWE's 'Unreleased DVDs that they put out in terms of match quality. There's a load of really good to great matches on here. There's a few disappointing or less exciting ones on disc two but overall it's a high quality set well worth getting. Any fan of Shawn Michaels is going to love this.
