The Mindscape Of Alan Moore [DVD]

magical vendetta
A documentary like none other that i've seen, massive universal laws and concepts, interlaced with shamanism, philosophy, comic books and politics with a backdrop of music and visual imagery... all sprayed over a scant autobiographical account of his life and work. Clearly made to draw the viewer into the "mindscape" (clues in the title chaps, nothing there promising big insights into his comics or life), i found that the music and art enhanced the intent well.No chemicals required for this one, except perhaps caffeine. It was rather exhausting viewing, mainly because it inspired so many thoughts along the way that i kept going off on tangents and had to keep scanning back. The viewer is also drawn into the "spell" (nearly said "trip") with Moores soporific monotone. Best approached in the morning after two coffees with a pad and pen, one gets the impression that after years of venting his furious but sympathetic genius against his shallow fellow humans, Moore has followed the last path left to him and this is his invite for "us" to follow. Thank you Alan.

Panel Beater.
Documentary in which co(s)mic writer and social commentator Alan Moore allows the viewers into his thoughts and processes behind the ideas that give way to his output..As viewers we get bombarded by occult imagery and psychedelia as Moore discusses life, the universe and everything. His style both whimsical and yet profound. Some casual viewers may find his ideas a little fringe but they'll be few and far between, given the somewhat esoteric nature of the dvd release anyway. I have to say I personally don't find Moore particularly 'out there' and generally think he talks a lot of sense, having come to many similar conclusions over the years myself, which is probably on account of our use of the same 'idea~space', eh Alan...Of course if you somehow did stumble across this by accident and it wasn't up your street, you could quite conceivably jump to the conclusion that Alan is a rambling, over opinionated, weirdy beardy who has nothing concrete to back up his dronings, is clearly away with the fairies most of the time and has an ego a mile wide!Regardless of what your opinion is on the fellow (like I said I'm a fan!), I think the dvd should be more widely seen, if for no other reason than the fact it is highly entertaining. This being the third time I've seen it since it was first released. The dvd is a double disc with plenty of extras including tons of interviews, a making of, a commentary and trailers.5/5.

Akin to a psychedelic experience.
If you listen to what Mr Moore is saying, and pay attention to the words and images of the film, your mind will be reeling by the end with the amount of mindblowing information it's just absorbed. A somewhat sly film which starts out under the guise of being about Alan and his comics but in reality is about something incredibly profound that any human being with a brain will find fascinating on some level. Watch with an open mind and you may find yourself permanently altered by the end, in a good way.

Entering the Mindscape.
Make no mistake, this is indeed the Mindscape of Alan Moore. For those interested in Moore's thoughts and advice on writing comics, this is probably not for you. While he does talk about comics, the main focus is upon Moore's world view and philosophy, which is explored at length and ranges from comics, to modern culture, the advance of the human race, and his own varied history. Being a particular fan of Moore and his work, I enjoyed it immensely, though much of what he says has appeared in previous interviews.

Interesting to say the least
I eagerly awaited the release of this film... only to be slightly disappointed, simply because much if what was said in this film has been said before in Moore's countless interviews, but if you haven't read those then this may well be for you. The film concentrates a lot on Moore's occultic beliefs and life compared to focusing on his works which I think will be a shame to many comic book fans. I also feel that maybe the director has tried to be too arty in the designs of the play, but that's just a personal feel. Overall, a good documentary as an insight into the genius' mind.
