The wood box was very nice, but was stained by grease that leaked from the plastic bag around the vise. The vise was nicely ground, but I did not check it for accuracy or precision. As soon as I got the vise out of the bag and began to clean the grease off it, I saw dozens of black spots on the ground surface. They were not rust spots. They were holes of random shape and size in various locations. In the engineering facility where I worked, we rarely saw that sort of defect in castings, but we knew it was a serious defect, and a reason to scrap the casting before it could be shipped to a customer. We used to joke that it was caused by the foundry being infested with iron worms, because the larger holes looked like they could have been eaten out by worms. Actually, the porosity is caused by bubbles of air trapped in the molten metal. So the vise is about to be returned.
