Older books from respected authors are MUCH better than newer books
I read this book 60 years ago and my grandson enjoyed the book, too

Gift for self
I read this years ago. I am now 75. The only "caution" is that the book reflects an attitude toward African Americans that many will find uncomfortable or unacceptable today. Thus, for young gifts it may not be appropriate.

Memory Lane
I furst read this book about 50 years ago. It was written in about 1912 and tells the tale of a boy who cannot avoid trouble. I enjoyed reading it now. Awesome book though done references may be dated.

What a fun book! From BOTH the parent's AND the somewhat naughty and foxy Penrod's perspective. Fun to read - even for an adult. Funny how older books have different language, phrases, and words I haven't seen. It's a fun learning experience and a wonderful snapshot back in time - almost like my own childhood. Think I'll get the sequel!

Disappointing Racism
The language is beautiful, and this funny tale was very entertaining for my Black daughter and I to read together. We enjoyed the book until we got to the passages that I have highlighted in the photos. I have looked at multiple reviews of the book and the author and no one warned me of this issue.Making matters even more infuriating, Amazon has yet to remove this book from my Kindle library. I have called twice. Instead of taking away Penrod and refunding my money, they took away Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.

Penrod is a coming of age book. Since it was written in 1914 some words were difficult to understand so I had to use a dictionary for definition. Penrod is a very quirky kid who doesn't want to be a gentleman and his story is very lively. I laughed hardest when Penrod and his friends take on the Bully. The three white boys are watching these two black boys ripping through the Bully's who turns out isn't so big as they thought. The description of the fight and skirmish is so funny. Penrod is sweet on a girl and on his twelfth birthday "coming of age party" he is surprised how things turn out. If I say to much it will be a spoiler. Even though it is difficult reading for our time it is well worth the read. I could easily picture the current time and the life style.I rated it a three because of the difficulty of the dialect.

Fantastic collection of stories
When I was a boy this book was passed onto me by my late Grandfather. This is a compiled works of all three Penrod stories by Booth Tarkington. That includes: Penrod, Penrod & Sam, and Pendrod Jashber. This is an amazing collection of stories and adventures of a young midwest boy, Penrod. If you really want to light the imagination of your child this is a fantastic book to give to them.
