8mm or 5/16 opening
The ID appears to be 8 mm. A 5/16 drill bit (which is 7.95 mm) rattles slightly when the set screws are backed out, therefore I believe it is metric. 4 Shank 2 pair set screws are 90 degrees from each other so it may allow centering the shaft of the bit if you are using a 5/16 inch shafted bit. You only have .05 to make up with the set screws. My Fisch 8mm shafted forstener bit fit. It is sturdy and the shaft outside diameter is 5/8 or 15.88 mm (perhaps 16 mm). I don't have a micrometer, but from drilling with a 15 mm forstener bit, it will not follow into the hole. If you are drilling beyond the depth of your forstener bit, it must be 16mm or greater bit. This Alfa forstener bit extension I received was flat black rather than silver as shown. It was embossed "Made in Germany" .

Worked as advertised.
Had to drill a 1" diameter Forstner bit hole 5 inches deep. This extension was a must in order to reach that depth.

8mm, not 5/16"
It is clearly printed on the shipping tube that this is for 8mm shank bits, not 5/16". It is a very solidly built extension. Excellant for deep drilling into wood turnings on the lathe. I am very satisfied with this tool.
