What does a 'height' of 8 feet mean? That it can range from 0 - 8 feet, or from 0 - 4? Not sure if 8' is the total length of the strap, or 16'

As this is not a regular cam buckle straps and it doesn't have to fold to half in order to work, the 8ft strap can give you a workout range from few inches away the anchor point to 8ft away in increment of 4 inches per step. Meaning, if you have an 8ft high anchor point, the rings can go all the way till the floor.

What’s the shortest length

When hooking only one carabiner to the first strap slot, the ring can be placed inside that loop- few inches away from the anchor point.

If i put my rings on the top setting of "1" with the carabiner, how far from where i attached it will it be? need to make sure i can make it short

When hooking only one carabiner to the first strap slot, the ring can be placed inside that loop- few inches away from the anchor point. We put together an installation video at the bottom of this product page. See option #3 for the shorter length option.

Can the "top" carabiner be used to directly connect to an anchor in the ceiling rather than connecting back to the webbing?

Yes it can be, the carabiners are very sturdy and high quality.
