Seven Yiddish folktales from a simpler time set in a Jewish village
The stories in this book are written for children They are Yiddish folktales that center around the silly people from the town of Cheim known as " a village of fools." The stories range from scary stories about devils to hilarious tales of the simple, but unusual people that live in or near the town of Cheim. These stories take you back into the Jewish past, and often center around the Jewish holiday of Hannukah. The village setting very much reminds me of the little traditional Yiddish village in the opening of "Fiddler on the Roof." The illustrations are beautiful but exaggerated by Maurice Sendak.

all his stories are brilliant and engrossing
These are short stories. They bring to mind the same magical place that Chagall painted: the shtetl. Well, for me, all his stories are brilliant and engrossing. These are not like some of his other stories that have sooo much depth. They're more like quips, funny stories. They are quite interesting little tales.

The reader did an excellent job which led me to purchase the book
I was introduced to this book via a reading of one of the stories on the CBC. The reader did an excellent job which led me to purchase the book. The stories are great. If you are anti-Semitic, forget the book, but I'm not so I love the stories.

Beautiful book of tales for children and adults
I have long loved Isaac Bashevis Singer's works . This small book of stories is a delight and joy. They are in the vein of the stories of my childhood...The Three Sillies.. and so on. he is a windful writer and his is a delightful book. It could be for children but i read it in one sitting and will read again today.
