No amount of cleaning an descaling worked, so I donated it to a local charity with the instruction manual in hopes someone else would go the effort to clean it. Then I purchased an updated unit. This new version requires constant maintenance. The manual says "every 4 weeks" and Sanitizing "4 per week". Each descaling or sanitizing cycle takes about 30 minutes and requires well over a gallon of clean water sent down the drain for rinsing, if you follow the instructions. That's 2.5 hours of maintenance and 5 gallons of wasted water a month, even if you only use RO filtered water. To keep you on schedule, the "Cleaning" warning starts blinking, and there is no language in the manual to reset it other than running a full "De-scaling". The problem is that it is still blinking after you waste that time and water. Several internet sources recommend holding down the "Power" button for 10 seconds, but that doesn't work, either. You are supposed to be able to reset the "Cleaning" light using the GE App, which requires installing a new App, several pages of Terms of Service, giving it access to your local WiFi network, starting an account with GE with several more pages of Terms Of Service, and creating a new password with minimum uppercase, minimum lower case, minimum numbers, and at least one "Special Character". Changing. *by K***Y on June 22, 2026* Life. Changing. Little did I know as I dreamed about a nugget ice maker for all these years how much I would love love it. When it showed up, my husband was so annoyed because he swears we have an overabundance of kitchen appliances & this thing is quite large & honestly, not cute. One week in, he was sold! Full disclosure, we named it Vanilla Ice. Now, he talks about his love of Vanilla as much as I do. Here what you NEED to know. I bought this machine with no actual knowledge of what it would take to own it, so I don’t want you to go in blind, like I did. 1. You will need to plan extra time to get it set up. You will have to do a bleach cycle for the set up to make sure it’s good & sanitary. It’s not hard, just time consuming & you'll want to be near a sink when you do it (or have a really big bucket!) 2. You will need to descale your Vanilla Ice at LEAST once a month. I guess based on your water, it might be more often. We are once a month, like clockwork. I had no idea this was going to be a thing. It’s an overnight process. You can go about this in a few different ways, I’ve done the vinegar & the tablets that are meant to descale & sanitize in one. Either way, it has to sit for several hours over night as part of the process. 3. You are going to want to run a bleach cycle every other month at LEAST, if not every month. You do not want mold to be a thing. I’ll be honest, those tablets that say they will sanitize too, will not be sufficient. It’s easy to add a bleach cycle when you descale, just extends the amount of downtime & how often you have to run the cleaning cycles. IF you have any issues & have to call customer service for help, the good news is that they are awesome. I had some confusion on the two different types of cleaning cycles, so I called for help & they were great. Based on how quickly I go through the extra water tank, I cannot imagine not having it, I’d be having to add water alllllll the time. LOVE having the extra water tank, cannot recommend it enough. If you’re going to invest in an ice maker, this is the one to get.
