Vagabond Definitive Edition, Vol. 3: Volume 3

It’s amazing

Perfect! The third deluxe edition released by Viz Media in the Vagabond series. I personally have volumes 1-37 in single format but decided to grab a few of these deluxe to compare and decide if I wanted to "upgrade". I think they're worth it (if you're comfortable reading and holding the larger 3in1 volume - rest it on a cushion or something?). There is next to no gutter loss and it's the best way to enjoy Inoue's art. The only minor complaint is Viz Medias quality control. The bottom half of the spine which has had a unique design for each deluxe isn't level with volumes 1-2 it is a few mm higher. Noticeable when side by side which is how they tend to be displayed on a shelf!

The physical quality alone makes it worth owning — oversized format, thick pages, and print clarity that truly honors Takehiko Inoue’s breathtaking artwork. Some panels feel like museum pieces. In this volume, Musashi’s journey deepens. It’s no longer just about brute strength or ego — we start seeing the psychological weight of his ambition. The fights aren’t just physical battles; they’re internal conflicts. There’s a powerful tension between pride, loneliness, discipline, and the pursuit of becoming “invincible.” What really stands out is the emotional intensity. Inoue’s ability to capture subtle facial expressions and silent moments is incredible. The pacing balances explosive action with quiet reflection, making the story feel mature and layered. This isn’t light reading. It’s raw, philosophical, and deeply human. Volume 3 feels like a major turning point in Musashi’s evolution — both as a warrior and as a man. A modern manga masterpiece.

These deluxe editions are truly something to behold, I love their design and the paper quality makes it a joy to read. They have also been extremely durable due to their rigid bindings. This is the best way to read this masterpiece.
