Ocean's 8 (Blu-ray) (BD)The tide has turned and itโs a whole new โOceanโs.โ Danny Ocean's sister, Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), recruits a seven women crew to plan and execute the heist of the century at New York City's star-studded annual Met Gala.]]> Review: An Excellent Spin-Off that Stands on Its Own! - Gary Rossโs โOceanโs 8โ follows Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), the sister of Danny Ocean (George Clooney), whoโs revealed to have died sometime since the events of โOceanโs Thirteen.โ The cast further includes Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Richard Armitage, and James Corden. In a connection to the previous trilogy of films, Elliott Gould and Qin Shaobo reprise their roles as Reuben Tishkoff and The Amazing Yen. At one point, Bonham Carter claims the Eskimo put their elders out on an ice floe in a callback to โOceanโs Twelve.โ The film moves from the glitz and glam of Las Vegas to the equally glamorous world of art, history, and fashion in New York City, where the 8 plan to steal the diamonds from a famous necklace from Cartier at the Met Gala. The new cast are all fantastic additions to the franchise, with Blanchett, Rihanna, and Carter standing out as the most interesting in this narrative. The others are certainly fun and Ross shows the audience their motivation, but they donโt have quite the same consistent development through the film, which is okay as this is an ensemble heist film. In their respective roles as the mark and the insurance investigator, Hathaway and Corden are equally interesting and offer a nice change from the usual casino bosses in the earlier films. โOceanโs 8โ is a worthy addition to the franchise and, perhaps most important for a spin-off, it successfully stands alone as its own heist film. Think of the standalone Marvel films that may include some references to others in the franchise, but can be enjoyed on their own merits. The story is smart, original, and updates the heist to reflect the technology of today. Hopefully the studio supports more so that the franchise can continue. Review: A Stylish Heist with Heart - "Ocean's 8" is a brilliant addition to the Ocean's franchise, earning a solid "5-star rating" for its fresh, female-forward perspective. This film not only showcases an incredible ensemble cast led by Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett but also passes the Bechdel Test with flying colors, featuring meaningful conversations between women that go beyond men. Set within the familiar heist universe of the "Ocean's" series, this sequel seamlessly integrates itself into the established narrative while carving out its own identity. The clever plot revolves around a meticulously planned robbery at the Met Gala, and the film's pacing keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. Each character is well-developed, bringing unique skills and personalities that enhance the story. The humor is sharp and engaging, with moments that evoke laughter while also highlighting themes of friendship and empowerment. The film's stylish presentation, from glamorous costumes to stunning cinematography, adds to its overall appeal. In summary, "Ocean's 8" is not just a heist film; it's a celebration of female camaraderie and ingenuity. Itโs a must-watch for fans of the franchise and newcomers alike, proving that women can lead thrilling stories just as effectively as their male counterparts.

An Excellent Spin-Off that Stands on Its Own!

Fun Movie, but maybe not for Ocean's 11 fans
If you're a fan of the actresses in the cast you'll probably love this. The supporting cast are all great, but Sandra Bullock and Kate Blanchett come across a "little cold" at time's, mainly just when they're both stuck having to imitate George Clooney and Brad Pitt in this film. That's my only real problem with the movie, in places it's too much "a remake" of the first George Clooney/Brad Pitt "Ocean's 11" film. Sandra Bullock is supposed to be George Clooney's sister, but she's basically playing George Clooney's character. "Ocean's 8" begins with an identical scene from "Ocean's 11" of her being released from prison, then cuts to Kate Blanchett "watering down Vodka" which is her equivalent to Brad Pitt "teaching movie stars to play cards" ...but whenever Bullock and Blanchett "get the chance to do their own thing" they shine as they usually do in everything they've ever been in... and oddly Anne Hathaway is a movie star playing a movies star reminiscent of Julia Roberts playing Julia Roberts in "Ocean's 12" ...but if none of that matters to you, then by all means watch "Ocean's 8" it's a lot of fun whenever Sandra Bullock and Kate Blanchett aren't taking it too seriously or stuck tying to be George Clooney and Brad Pitt instead of being Sandra Bullock and Kate Blanchett... I'd love to see another one of these films with this same cast
