## Overview

Liquitex Professional Gesso Surface Prep Medium in black is a premium 237ml acrylic medium designed to prime and seal diverse surfaces with a durable, water-resistant satin finish. Its fluid formula allows easy mixing and thinning, enabling custom tints and smooth application. Trusted by professionals and educators, it dries in 24 hours and provides excellent adhesion for both acrylic and oil paints.

## Description

Liquitex offers the broadest range of acrylic mediums to inspire creativity at every stage of the painting process. Surface Prep Mediums are used to seal prime and add tooth (for color adhesion) to all surfaces such as canvas wood paper and metal. This same preparation is used for both acrylic and oil paint. Our professional gessoes usually take just one coat, and adding Liquitex Soft Body color to any gesso creates customized tints and primers. Liquitex Super Heavy Gesso Surface Prep Medium is an innovative impasto acrylic gesso used to prepare painting surfaces for acrylic and oil paint. Creates thick, sculptural applications. Excellent ground for acrylic and oil paint. Mix with acrylic color to have a tinted ground. Excellent base coat primer for many applications, including murals; one coat is usually all that is required. Can be applied to any material or surface that will accept traditional acrylic media, such as canvas, paper, wood, etc. Liquitex Surface Prep Mediums are lightweight, non-toxic, and dry to a water-resistant, non-yellowing surface. APPLICATION: For canvas, paper, wood, or any clean porous non-oily surface. Tint color with Liquitex Soft or Heavy Body Artist Colors. Use with knife or brush. ## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this dry matte or glossy? Canit also be used as a sealer/varnish? TIA!**
A: Matte, and also gritty. The grittiness is intentional as it contains pumice or something similar. It seals as well as other acrylic mediums. For a sealer, look at other acrylic mediums that are meant for this. And it's definitely NOT a varnish because it dries somewhat milky.

**Q: Can this be used to cover mistakes or to reuse an already painted canvas?**
A: If you’re referring to white gesso , yes you can cover an old painting with one or two coats. Clear gesso will also allow you to paint over it but you will see the image you’re covering as you paint.

**Q: Would someone recommend prepping a metal surface for painting with this product a necessity? (I am unfamiliar with Gesso)**
A: Yes, it will be beneficial to prep the metal surface. You will want to roughen up the surface with steel wool or sanding paper. Then be sure to wash it really well to remove any oils or debris. Then you can apply the gesso.

**Q: What's the difference between the Liquitex "Professional" gesso and the "Basics" gesso?**
A: I had used only Liquitex products (gesso and paints) for years. Due to the expense of painting, I decided to try the Liquitex Value Series Basics Gesso. It came in a 1.89 ltr. (1/2 gal.) bucket. I have never been more disappointed in a product!! I used it, but it was difficult to use because it had the consistency of Jello. It did not thin well, and even had lumps that needed to be strained out. I still have 1/2 of the bucket left, and only use it on projects that do not require a fine texture. I would NOT recommend it.
