Josef Albers in Mexico

Lucky enough to read a pre-release copy at the Guggenheim!
I read this book (parts of it, anyway) before its release date - prerelease reading copies were provided at the New York Guggenheim Museum's exhibition of Alber's art! While I didn't read all the way through (there's a limit to how much you can get through on a bench in the corner) I enjoyed what I read. Unlike some art-books, it's a genuine exploration into the couple's interests and Albers' development in both photography and other art, and is a proper book with text accompanied by photographs, not a puff-piece artsy book of photos and nothing else.High point for me, though, was the book design. The typography is beautifully understated and sits quietly on the page; I'd read it for the typesetting alone. Serious kudos to the book designers; I'd love to know what the body font was. If you like discovering artists (Albers was new to me) I can safely recommend this book, from the reading bench of the Gugg!

Albers was the living artist who most influenced artist Jacob Lawrence 1917-2000
Josef Albers was the artist-teacher who had the greatest influence on Jacob Lawrence after Lawrence left New York to begin his own teaching career at Black Mountain College. I learned this fact as a student of Jacob Lawrence when I was a graduate student. Around 1968 in interview with Carroll Greene, Jacob Lawrence named Josef Albers as providing him the greatest influence (amongst the better known white artists still living). You can access this same interview by internet search and read for yourself. What a glorious book of book design this book of Albers is! Tour de force extraordinaire!Seeing the photography of ancient Mexico provides new insight to those of us not always so fond of Albers. Whether you love Albers a lot or only just like him a bit, this book will be a great addition to your library.
