So exactly how do you use this, just press down with the punch, don't have to tap it with a hammer?

Yes; they are 'automatic', meaning they reset automatically. They are supposed to reset (these reset sometimes, just very rarely). A GOOD auto punch will reset as fast as you are able to push. Don't let the workmanship fool you; they will fail!!!

Does it have a warranty?

I did not have any warranty, but I have it for almost a year and I am still using it and the point is still as sharp as the first day, punching no problem in steel , Stainless steel , or any other metal. I like it .

will it puncture a tin can?

I punched a hole in a coke can which is made of aluminum. These tools are center punches not hole punches but I guess you could use them as a hole punch if the tin is thin enough.

Can this center punch set be used to create a pilot hole in stucco?

Probably not. This is a center punch, and what it does is make a mark on the place that you want to drill a hole, usually in metal. If you want to drill into stucco you will need a carbide tipped masonry bit. Hope this helps.
