Do you want to read a book that doesn’t want to make you stop reading? Well I got a book for you! The author Louis Sachar, wrote book has a National Book Award. This story starts with a boy named Stanley, who’ has to go to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention camp. Stanley is very nice kid, who does nothing wrong in life he is a normal kid. He is going to a camp because a pair of sneakers fell on him and the police thought he stole them. Stanley was given a choice to go jail or to go to Camp Green Lake, which he choose. Stanley is a overweight kid who has no friends. However he is going to this camp, he hopes to make new friends. This camp Stanley is going to can be described as a desert, even though its called Camp Green Lake, the lake had dried out. When Stanley goes to camp he is struggling to dig holes because of the harsh conditions and the terrible heat. Stanley notice kids in the camp had nicknames for instance one kid was named x-ray. Since Stanley dig so much holes he was nicknamed caveman.Stanley had to digs holes because people thought if he dug a five inch hole everyday it would give time to think about of what he did. The plot of the story is to reach a top of a mountain. The theme of the book is friendship because Stanley meets new people in the camp and they all work together to reach their goals. Later on in the story Stanley would find something great, read the book Holes to find out more!My thoughts on this books is that if you keep on reading it you are really going to enjoy the story. This book has great plot and a great theme,I recommend people from age 9 or over to read this book.Bobby7th Grade Student

A Classic Book From the Late 90's! But Parents and Teachers: Be Warned
My 5th grade teacher read this book out loud to my class and I even got to see the movie when it came out. Many years later, I re-read this book and completely fell in love with it. The narration is very simple, and I like how everything gets straight to the point. Well, most of the time. I do admit that I got bored reading the descriptions of Stanley digging holes and the setting of the desert in general. There were many sentences that were detailing the dry dirt, the digging experience, and they were overall completely unnecessary. The book does reflect on the dark realities of the "troubled kid/teen" industry and how many institutions from the criminal justice system don't really care about the kids who have been at the wrong place at the wrong time (that's my absolute favorite phrase from the book itself). As for the characters themselves, the Author does a great job in describing all of them based on their personality. As for Stanley, he's a great kid. I just wished he would have had a stronger backbone and defended himself against the other juvenile delinquents such as X-Ray. God, I seriously couldn't STAND X-Ray. The other campers didn't gain my sympathy: only Zero captured my heart, and I was rooting for him and Stanley the entire time. Overall, this books is a great read, even for adults! I know that there are many things about this story that seem "unrealistic" such as a fresh onion field magically surviving in the desert, but because this is a kid's book, I think the author wanted to spread his imagination and add a bit of magical realism to the mix.To parents and teachers: Please be warned that there are many scenes of violence, extorsion, scams, racism, and even disrespect from the kid campers towards one another. Please have a conversations with your kids about these topics before introducing them to this book and have other discussions about other topics such the exploitation of the criminal justice system, inequality, and even the dangers of psychics/mediums (I'm talking about you, Madame Zeroni). Once kids are aware of these topics and themes, I think it should be safe for them to read this book.
