This is a beautiful shaving bowl, and about the right size for a medium size brush. I keep the soap warm by sitting it on an old fashion shaving scuttle, and being natural horn, it holds the warmth well - no cold second and third lather. There was a slight "natural" smell to begin with, which I didn't find unpleasant, and after a few days' use, it faded completely anyway. I didn't find any need to use bleach or anything that strong, though I am sure the material varies, as do we!On balance, a very nice shaving bowl, at a very good price.

A horn shaving bowl, looks good, the only drawback is that it's smooth, not very practical as a shaving bowl but as a beginners shaving bowl still a worthwhile investment.This being natural horn colours and hues vary from bowl to bowl.Still 5 stars as its still a beautiful objest that could be used for other things.

UPDATEAs suggested by Handicrafts Home's customer services team, I bought a chlorine-based bleach and I have soaked the original bowl on a number of occasions. As I wasn't sure what effect the bleach would have on the bowl's colouring - which I like very much - I started with a very weak solution and didn't let it sit for very long. I have now repeated the process on several occasions, and have worked up to leaving a 10:1 solution in the bowl for 3 hours. It appears to have have no detrimental effect on the colour and has made a big difference to the odour, which is no longer noticeable. As a result I have incr the this to a four star rating, and I am using the bowl to lather my shaving cream!ORIGINAL REVIEWBought this to complement my faux horn handled Truefitt and Hill DE razor and brush. It looks good, it's a good width, perhaps a little shallow, and, as a result of being an artisan piece, it is charmingly asymmetrical. However, when it met warm water, it was a lot less charming: it released an odour somewhere between a ripe dung heap and burned hair. So far it has been sufficiently bad that I haven't been able to bring myself to use it as a lather bowl. Handicrafts Home have been great and are sending out a replacement - and have made suggestions about how to to neutralise the smell by filling the bowl will chlorine (using bleach). No idea yet how well this will work, or indeed if the smell is restricted to a single bowl. But I will update the review when I know!

Excellent feel and looks like absolute quality. Used it this morning and does the job perfectly. Very reasonable price indeed.

This is an attractive bowl, but as another reviewer has noted, it emits a foul reek when it comes into contact with warm water. Additionally, the inside is lined with plastic which was peeling slightly at the rim. I have repurposed mine for storing small odds and ends, and recommend not to use for shaving lather.

The bowl is slightly too small and shallow meaning the soap tends to come out the edges of the bowl. The worst thing is that when soap and warm water come into contact with it, there is a strange smell like phosphorus from the bowl.

I bought this to use as a shaving lather bowl. Just the right size and it looks fantastic.

buon giorno a tutti. ormai è un mese che la sto usando, perfetta delle giuste dimensioni, per informazione Diametro cm 15, qualità prezzo perfetto, è una ciotola per la crema per rasatura per cui l'oggetto ha la giusta rifinitura per questo lavoro, non aspettatevi una lucidata come da foto per fortuna non è così perfetta e questo fa in modo che la crema si formi in maniera perfetta, io la consiglio a tutti gli utilizzatori di metodo di rasatura essendo bella ampia ed anche bella da vedere. mia opinione personale, io mi ritengo molto soddisfatto di questo prodotto.

Nice lathering bowl. I think 5 inch is good enough unless you have big hands.
