i can't comment on the actual lifeline part of the seeing how i haven't fallen... yet (knock on wood) but the auto retracting device is doing its job just fine i find it to be pretty useful when you need to move and don't want to or its more dangerous than usual to unhook to move it, it did have a couple sharp spots on it but filed them down easy enough.
