Oculus Go Standalone Virtual Reality Headset - 32GB

What a great little device! Totally self-contained, you simply connect to the internet and immerse yourself in VR. Oculus have an app store on the device which allows you to purchase or download (for free) various apps, games and experiences. There's something to suit all audiences and the headset is perfect for casual and/or social use. I've experimented a bit in the past with an Oculus DK2 and also have a Windows Mixed Reality headset that I bought cheap just after Christmas. The Go is by far the higher quality experience. The display is far superior to the DK2 and it 'just works', unlike the Windows Mixed Reality headset which is incredibly finicky in terms of set up and will frequently crash out. The Go is a smooth experience and means that I use it every day, not just on occasion. The range of possible experiences is wide - I enjoy everything from playing a quick racing game, to watching some VR videos to chilling out in computer generated locations while meditating. There really is something for everyone. The Oculus store has a deal of the day, where you can often pick up some of the best games with a healthy discount. I recommend making a wish list and then checking back every day to see if the items you want are on offer. My favourite apps so far are: * Daedalus - superb Portal style puzzle game * Spark of light - great little adventure puzzle game * Guided Relaxation VR - superb way to switch off from the outside world and follow one of loads of 10 minute narrated meditations * Virtual virtual reality - Very funny adventure * Endspace - amazing space shooter * Dead and Buried - really fun Western cowboy shooter ...and many more! The headset is very comfortable to wear, if a little front heavy, but sits nicely on your head without any sharp protrusions (unlike the WMR headset I have!). The image quality is excellent and suffers very little from the dreaded "Screen door effect" where you can see the black lines between pixels. My only gripe is about the battery capacity, which is a little limited. However, if you charge it between uses, then you shouldn't have any issues as it will probably go for a couple of hours on a charge. I also found the USB port a little stiff, so I bought a magnetic charging cable where you can leave the USB connector plugged in and simply unsnap the cable. This makes charging a real breeze and removes any worry of damaging the USB port on the headset.

I had played on a friend Oculus Rift when they first came out and was instantly blown away. Being a Mac user, however, it's never been an option for me. I've also always wanted my parents to experience VR too, I was delighted to see that the Oculus Go had been released as a standalone (though requiring a phone / tablet). So, Xmas came and the Oculus Go popped up and I bought my Mother one. Again, I was blown away just as I was before and the multiplayer aspect dawned on me.....so I bought myself one. I'm now connecting with my Mother (me in my house and her at her house) and we connect in a virtual room to play games. That's only what we've done so far. I have a lot more planned. The VR headset is of a reasonable build. Surprisingly light - especially when you consider the processor and all the 'innards' are inside this. Which brings me onto one point which was a downside. On my second 'experience' the unit was hot at the front (which I suspect to be a heatsink of itself) and I got a warning and advice to power down. This happened after only 30 mins use. Researching, this didn't appear to be common problem, so I was both relieved but worried for my individual unit. Thankfully, I haven't had the problem since, though heat is still present - which is expected. Back into the positives and focus on the main points - It DOES feel like you are in the experience. The resolution isn't as great quality as 4K by any means, but it's more than good enough, especially for rapid play action games. Games are plenty and the library is building steadily by developers. I downloaded the 10 pack of games on a Xmas Special price of £29.99 and Ive been absorbed within 3 of them so far, with the rest still to explore. This review will be updated.

So, I like it. I think it's super fun to use, cool how the sound feels like it goes right into your ears, even though you're not wearing headphones, and some of the games and apps are really cool (some aren't too!). The negatives are that the battery really doesn't last very long - 1.5-2hrs, if you're lucky. And the headset does get quite heavy after a while. I do think VR is the future for entertainment, though. It's so immersive and cool; I'm looking forward to the form factor improving in the future - it needs to be lighter, slimmer, be less power hungry ... and of course, cheaper!

The good: Excellent optics, better than the full rift in my opinion. Very good social features, meeting up with friends is seamless and very impressive. Comfy to wear. Really good sound and excellent spacial soundfield from the built in speakers. The bad: Battery life isn't great, less than 2 hours. I just leave mine plugged into the charger as the battery drains so fast. This leads to the unit getting quite warm, which can't be good. Not many must have games, most are pretty naff to be honest. Facebook being pushed at every opportunity, no, I don't want a Facebook account, so stop making things difficult because I haven't. Controller gets juddery on occasions. Headset has locked up or malfunctioned on me a few times as well. Overall this is a great device with a few niggles. I look forward to future development. EDIT: after a year of use I'm dropping my rating because the heat issue actually dries out my eyes and fogs the lenses constantly. The battery also drains fast. Save up and get a quest instead, it's everything this should have been and more.

Ottimo software che risulta essere leggero ed essenziale, eccetto per le connesioni bluetooth limitate (aggiorneranno). Due le case produttrici che hanno dato vita a questo visore: Facebook (la cui implementazione nel software si vede) e Xiaomi (altissima maniacalità nei paricolari, sia hardware che software) Audio: Ottimo, soprattuto per la spazialità che si percepisce Video: Ottima risoluzione del pannello interno che permette un lungo utilizzo senza stancare gli occhi (le "ombre colorate" ai bordi sono leggerissime in confronto a qualsiasi altro visore, questo denota l'alta qualità delle lenti) Comodità: leggerissimo per essere un VR Standalone, non pesa sul naso e risulta comodo sulla faccia Batteria: dipende dall'utilizzo, in media a me dura circa 2 ore (utilizzando app pesanti come Alterspace durerà circa 1 ora e 30) Utilizzo: Innovativo proprio per questo, la facilità e velocità per utilizzare questo prodotto lo rendono un MUST HAVE se si rientra in delle particolari categorie suddivise all'interesse 1- Giocare con questo visore è divertente ma non sarà mai (ovviamente) all'altezza di un dispositivo da utilizzare con un pc, sarebbe come paragonare un deltaplano ad un aereo 2- Lavorare, motivo per cui ho deciso di acquistarlo, collegando il proprio portatile (o pc) tramite wifi, sarà possibile avere multischermi alla grandezza desiderata, ovunque vi troviate (utilizzando ovviamente l'hardware del portatile e streammando solamente lo schermo sul visore) 3- Divertimento assicurato portandolo da amici e/o famigliari che, seppur ignoranti in materia tecnologica, saranno capace di apprezzare questo prodotto così intuitivo e divertente. Hardware: Ottima scelta di una componentistica adatta a far tutto il necessario su questo oculus go (ovviamente non immaginatevi di giocare ad un Crysis qui sopra), ottime lenti che danno una vera profondità di campo rimanendo un prodotto al di sopra delle aspettative. 3Dof ovvero movimento a 3 assi, sia per il visore che per il controller, che comporta una rotazione del collo e del polso risultando sempre preciso e senza mai lag dovuto alla perdita di calibrazione. NOTA BENE: non è possibile avere un 6DoF su un visore portatile in quanto servirebbe sempre una camera posta a registrare i movimenti nello spazio, quindi sarebbe inutile lamentarsi di ciò con un visore di questo tipo. Software: Ottima programmazione di una versione Android adattata a questo visore che permette di trovarsi a proprio agio con qualsiasi movimento e qualsiasi cambio app senza mai risultare pesante e/o disorientante. NOTA BENE: chi dice il contrario conferma di rientrare nella categoria di persone che soffrono di motion sickness, solitamente ragazzini troppo giovani per l'utilizzo di un VR, persone troppo anziane o persone proprio non adatte all'uso di questa tecnologia. CONCLUSIONI: A chi consiglio questo prodotto? Ad un pubblico capace di apprezzare la vera rivoluzione di un prodotto come questo, quindi da escludere sicuramente chi vuole giocare solamente e/o ricerca una grafica fotoreale, mentre invece lo consiglio vivamente a chi saprebbe come sfruttarlo appieno lavorandoci, comunicando con persone lontane, avendo voglia di imparare e visitare luoghi e soprattutto per chi si sposta frequentemente e non vuole rinunciare alla comodità di avere uno o più monitor della grandezza che si preferisce, ovunque si trovi. Prezzo sicuramente perfetto che farà pensare come questo Oculus Go si meriti ogni centesimo dopo diverse ore di utilizzo!

Bevor Sie dies lesen: Dies war meine erste VR-Brille, also habe ich keinen direkten Vergleich. Jedoch versuche ich es so ausführlich wie möglich zu beschreiben. Verpackung: Für viele mag die Verpackung keine große Rolle spielen aber es ist schön, zu sehen, dass sich immer mehr Firmen ein Beispiel an Apple nehmen und auch Wert auf die Präsentation der Produkte legen. Demnach kommt die Brille in einem verstärkten Pappkarton der im Innenraum extra ausgepolstert wurde. Des Weiteren kann man die Verpackung auch in Zukunft als Aufbewahrungsort für die Brille verwenden, wobei ich jedem empfehle sich eine extra Hartschalen Box für die Brille anzulegen. Die Brille: Die Brille ist zwar aus Plastik, macht aber einen soliden Eindruck und wirkt sehr wertig. Das Aussehen ist eine andere Geschichte. Entweder man liebt die Erscheinung oder ist eben nicht begeistert von der grauen Brille. Wenn man aber ehrlich ist, ist das Aussehen nebensächlich, da man sie beim tragen logischer Weise nicht sieht und sie in meinem Fall nur Zuhause und nicht in der Bahn oder im Flugzeug genutzt wurde. Komfort: Für meine erste VR-Brille saß sie sehr bequem im Gesicht und hat an keiner Stelle gedrückt aber da hat jeder andere Empfindungen. Die Brille wird mit frei einstellbaren Gummizügen am Kopf befestigt und ist demnach sehr anpassungsfähig. Die Brille ist an der Gesichtspartie noch extra ausgepolstert. Das Polster kann entnommen werden, um es nach reichlicher Nutzung zu waschen. Für Brillenträger ist ein extra Abstandhalter für Brillen vorhanden, der hinter der Polsterung eingesetzt werden kann, um mehr Raum für die Sehhilfe zu bieten. Fernbedienung: Die Fernbedienung ist sehr simpel gehalten und ist für jeden sehr intuitiv bedienbar (egal ob Technikprofi oder Laie). Neben der AAA-Batterie, wird außerdem ein Band mitgeliefert, um die Fernbedienung auch am Handgelenk zu befestigen. So wird extra Schutz vor zufälligem Fall geboten. Das Tracking der Fernbedienung ist sehr präzise und sie fungiert wie ein Laserpointer, mit dem es sehr leicht fällt Apps zu öffnen oder Optionen auszuwählen. Akku: Der Akku hält erfahrungsgemäß ca. 2 Stunden bei normalem streamen und ca. 1,5 Stunden bei leichten Spielen. Die Ladezeit kommt aber hier auf gerundete 2 Stunden, wobei es bei anderen auch schon länger gewesen ist. Im Bezug zur Laufzeit gehen die Meinungen natürlich stark auseinander. Einige können mit 2 Stunden sehr gut leben und andere sind natürlich von Gear VR oder der Rift eindeutig längere Zeiten gewohnt. Man muss aber bedenken, dass es sich hier um ein Gerät handelt, mit dem man Media konsumieren kann und 2 Stunden für gut 90 % der heutigen Filme vollkommen ausreichen. Natürlich kann man einen Netflix Marathon oder die geliebten Trilogien vergessen aber für einen entspannten Abend, ist es für mich mehr als ausreichend (Wobei es meiner Meinung nach auch seine medizinischen Vorteile hat, da vor allem Neuankömmlinge in der VR-World sehr schnell Kopfschmerzen bekommen können und man sich so oder so zeitliche Limits setzten sollte). Anschlüsse: Es befinden sich an der Brille nur 2 Anschlüsse. Zum einen den 3,5 mm Klinkenstecker für die Kopfhörer und einen Micro-USB Anschluss zum Laden der Brille und zur Datenübertragung via Computer. Viele haben sich hier jedoch einen USB-C Anschluss gewünscht, da dieser nicht nur eine schnellere Ladezeit versprochen hätte, sondern auch eine schnelle Datenübertragung bietet, falls man Dokumente wie Bilder oder Filme vom Computer auf die Brille übertragen will. Hier gilt jedoch, dass USB-C Anschlüsse im Kommen sind und die Micro-USB sowie die USB 3.0 Anschlüsse noch abgelöst werden müssen. Die 2. Generation, die schon für Anfang nächsten Jahres angekündigt wurde, wird diesen wahrscheinlich besitzen. Lautsprecher: Die Lautsprecher sind meiner Meinung nach, das Überraschendste an der Brille. Hier wird noch mal verdeutlicht, dass es sich hier um ein wahrhaftiges Standalone Gerät handelt. Die Lautsprecher sind sehr klar und deutlich und bieten einen guten Klang sowie eine 360 Grad Audio Wiedergabe. Dadurch ist es sehr einfach anderen Personen diese Brille zu präsentieren, da man sie nur aufsetzen muss und schon mittendrin ist, ohne auf extra Kopfhörer angewiesen zu sein. Außerdem geben diese Lautsprecher noch eine sichere Verbindung zu Umwelt, da man nicht komplett von der Umgebung abgeschottet ist, wie es mit normalen Kopfhörern der Fall wäre. Apps: Zurzeit gibt es an die 1000 Apps, wobei hier wiederum viele kostenpflichtig sind. Ich kam natürlich nicht dazu alle auszuprobieren aber möchte hier gerne eine Warnung niederschreiben: Viele Apps bieten einzigartige Erfahrungen und sind sehr detailliert und mit viel Liebe designt worden. Aber bei genau so vielen Anwendungen fehlen noch bestimmte Anpassungen wodurch es sehr schnell zu Kopfschmerzen und Übelkeit kommen kann (Jeder ist natürlich unterschiedlich empfindlich aber ich will es gerne gesagt haben) Speicher: Die Brille ist in 2 Varianten zu erwerben: 32 und 64GB. Für alle, Die die Brille ausschließlich für Streaming Portale wie Netflix oder Plex nutzen möchten, ist die 32 GB Variante ausreichend. Aber für diejenigen, die schon im Voraus wissen, dass sie diverse Apps, einige Fotos wie Filme auf der Brille haben möchten, rate ich zu 64er Variante. Netflix und Amazon Prime Video: Meinerseits habe ich die Brille ausschließlich für das Streamen von Netflix und Prime-Video genutzt. Die Netflix-App hat mich bei der ersten Nutzung sehr positiv überrascht. Ich empfehle jedem sich zu dieser App im Internet Videos anzusehen, um zu verstehen, worüber ich hier schreibe. Man sitzt in einer Alpen-Hütte vor einem ca. 100 Zoll Fernseher und sobald ein Video gestartet wird, werden die umliegenden Lichter gedimmt. Es war eine sehr schöne Umsetzung der App und hat mit mich durchaus sprachlos dastehen/sitzen lassen. Leider gibt es keinen Amazon Video App. Wer aber dennoch Prime-Video nutzen will, dem empfehle ich den Browser der Oculus Go zu nutzen. Hier geht man wie gewohnt auf die Prime-Video Seite, sucht sich einen Film oder eine Serie aus und fordert dann in den Einstellungen die Desktop Variante an und schon kann Prime-Video genutzt werden. Wiese habe ich sie zurück geschickt? Ich konnte die Brille nach der Einrichtung kaum aus der Hand legen und war sehr zufrieden mit meiner Investition. Das Problem lag aber daran, dass dies meine erste VR-Brille war und ich somit hier meine ersten Erfahrungen machen musste. Darauf wurde mir folgendes klar: Nach der ersten Nutzung bekam ich leichte Kopfschmerzen und dies war nach weiterem Gebrauch nicht anders. Meine Schwester, die eine Brille trägt und die VR-Brille auf hatte, bekam dieses Problem nicht. Also gehöre ich wohl leider zu den Leuten, die einfach anfälliger für solche Reize sind. Es ist schade aber es macht für mich keinen Sinn, die Brille zu behalten. Fazit: Obwohl ich sie zurückschicken musste, bereue ich es nicht, es ausprobiert zu haben und bin nachwievor sprachlos, wie weit diese Technik heutzutage schon ist. Man sollte sich hier nicht von den schlechten Rezensionen beeinflussen lassen, da diese Personen entweder die Technik nicht verstehen oder ein 200€ Standalone Gerät mit einer 400€ Oculus-Rift (Die nebenbei noch einen high end Computer benötigt) vergleichen. Ich für meinen Teil habe es probiert und bereue es nicht im Geringsten. Die Rücksendung verlief dank Amazon sehr schnell und der Support ließ wie gewohnt keine Wünsche offen. Zum Schluss sei gesagt, dass ich diese Brille zu 100% empfehlen kann. Ich hoffe, dass ich hiermit noch einigen Personen helfen konnte, die sich noch unsicher sind.

Got this for my 14 year old Christmas and he loves it. First impressions are great VR set, way better then those sets you put you phone in. We have played the HTC vive at rental locations and find while not identical the Go is comparable. Not needing a computer was the reason we went with this, as the vive and rift would require us to upgrade that machine first. The oculus store has a good selection of apps and the video is amazing. Roller Coaster game is our favourite is and just sitting in your chair can make you feel like you are on a ride, definitely a must have game
