Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Journey to Antarctica

Human feat pushed to adversity in a tough environment.
This is the second Caroline Alexander book I have purchased and I am impressed with her quality of writing, I saw a documentary about Ernest Shacklton and this prompted me to read this book. The rare photograph's of Frank Hurley of Shackelton and his men on the polar expedition are first class as it documents the challenges of surviving on polar ice which pushed these men to the brink of death. Shackelton proved to be a leader who was a great humanitarian who cared for his men during this failed exhibition, his crew were men who were trawler men, a cook, scientists, meteorologists strong men who were faced with adverse conditions in an environment which proved challenging. Shakelton was aware of Scott's failed journey and was determined to look after his men every step of the way even if it meant having to leave 22of his crew behind in order to leave them on an island, six other crew members including himself were chosen to make a 150 mile journey to the Falklands to a whaling station part of their journey had taken them over rugged terrain. Two years after the six Mens journey to the whaling station, they arrived exhausted with tattered clothing unrecognisable they were given clothes and supplies and made the return journey to elephant island to rescue the men whom were left behind. Shackelton's ship was called Endurance, an apt name as he and his men were pushed by sheer endurance at this polar expedition.

Endurance
What should and could be a beautiful book is ruined by the fact that 15 pages are in German ! The book is obviously a second, so you get what you pay for and it's not worth sending back. I will not use this seller again. If I were reviewing just the book, I will tell you that it's a very simple, easy read and should be read as a short record of Shackleton's adventure accompanied by the most beautiful pictures. One does get a feel for the members of the expedition and their personalities, as well as the terrible situation they found themselves in.Just wish I could give it 5 stars. Trust the Germans to spoil it !

An Incredible Photographic Account!
In the quest to cross the Antartic Continent in 1914, brave-hearted soul Captain Ernest Shackleton and his twenty-seven man crew set sail on a perilous, nearly deadly journey. Less than 100 miles from their destination the "Endurance" became hopelessly trapped in an ice floe; slowing breaking apart. Their ordeal of living on this drifting berg for months, only to be stranded on a solid piece of land later for nearly two years is mind-boggling.The personal accounts of the crew members daily treacherous turmoils, coupled with an undefeatable and inspired leader (Shackleford) is devastating. Photographer Frank Hurley supplied some of the most breathtaking and dynamic pictures of the saga of the trip, one can only become overwhelmed with the enormity of the dilema. It is simply too real and too heartbreaking. This beautfully crafted "coffee table" book is one of many released regarding the extraordinary plight of this team against nature. Although author Caroline Alexander borrows heavily from previous accounts and repeats some of the adventures from her earlier "Mrs. Chippy's Last Expediton", "Endurance" is the classic adventure tale of the last Century.A wonderful coolaboration of writer/photographer, this makes a great gift. A 'beyond Hollywood' story that many have never heard, much less seen in this manner makes it extraordinary!
