Great, even after so many years!
Introduction This is going to be a long one, so brace yourselves. First off, I should mention that I got the iPod used, obviously since it was replaced by a newer model 5 years ago. I wanted to carry with me my whole music collection, some 60GB worth of music, not burden the battery if my smartphone, and not punch a hole through my wallet altogether. Hence, i decided to buy a used iPod Classic, since a new one is too expensive. Build Quality Even though I bought it as used, it only had a single bump on one corner, evidence that it had been dropped once, and hardly any scratches on its back or sides, which is remarkable by itself, considering it has been used at least since 2007. The build quality is to die for. The iconic clickwheel, the anodized aluminium front, the sleek form factor! It is built like a tank, and last it will. Battery It was fitted with a brand new battery, and I have to say that it definitely excels. Without constant changes (volume, track, etc) it can easily play music for 20 hours, while it can play videos for 5-6 hours, though with today's 5'+ screen smartphones boasting Full HD resolutions, I doubt anyone will even consider torture themselves with a 2' screen! Sound Quality Having already listened most of my collection, and having listened some songs on a friends' iPod Classic 160GB 6/7th edition, I believe the 80GB version sounds brighter and richer in bass, mids and highs through my Skullcandy and AKG overhead cans, and through my Sennheiser in-ear headphones, as well as my living room rig, which consists of an old vacuum tube Kenwood amplifier. I guess that the last one does not count, as vacuum tube amplifiers make anything sound sweet! My point is, it sounds way better than the latest model, whether from a difference in sound chips or from "burning-in" the audio chip, I don't know. All in all, I am quite pleased with this product, and a lot more for what i payed for the thing! If you are looking for a good way to carry your music around, love listening to music, and don't want to take a toll on your smartphone's battery life, then get it!

possibly one of the best mp3's around
the apple ipod is a mp3 wich is highly popular around the world. for a while ive been switching beetween a array of mp3 players wich either didnt have alot of space or wich broke down after a while. being a musician i obviously listen to music alot and so when i got a bit of money to buy one at first i was a bit hesitant having to pay about 160£ for a mp3 player but know im glad i did. i like the curved corners and the round pad wich make it different from other mp3's it looks pretty good and with the added feature of playing videos the screen was a good size to watch all sorts of tv shows, podcasts and live performances. its also a pretty sturdy and durable item, obviously the back panel can get scratched a bit but i did drop it pretty hard onto a pavement and it didnt seem scuffed at all. the item came in a good padded package with all the said bits and pieces inside the box, the item was delivered in 2 days! wich i was amazingly happy about. the only slight downfall is the program 'itunes' wich is used to put your desired music, photos and videos onto the program, at first itunes is hard to figure out but after a little while it seems easier but with things like deleting stuff of it and getting album artwork to work on your ipod, itunes is probobly the must stuck up and annoying program to ever exist. but i do know of a few alternate programs to itunes. overall the ipod is a good investment for music lovers, a great piece of kit.

I'll be honest, I'm only giving this 4 stars because not everybody is as fussy as me
I've had a fourth generation iPod for several years, and always found its sound quality to be excellent. Although the supplied headphones are, bluntly put, terrible. The detail and clarity brought out by a good pair of headphones like those made by Etymotic Research really makes the player shine - especially when the EU volume limit has been removed so you can really rock out (for like five minutes at a time, or else your ears blow up). Which is where the problem starts. I've used several pairs of headphones with my new iPod, and the better quality the headphones, the more faults are shown in the iPod Classics' reproduction. Using the same headphones, my iBook is fine, my stereo is fine, even my desktop computer's onboard sound is fine. But not the Classic. Nope. The midrange has slight distortion, the soundstage is closed in, the highs and lows sound artificial, and all in all, I've listened to far better cassette Walkmen in the early 90s. To finish it off, if you're using less sensitive headphones, the volume is too low and is apparently impossible to unlock. I inquired about the sound quality to Apple, and they quickly sent me another one. It's just as bad. Pros: Cheap. Large storage. New user interface. The front, at least, seems more durable. Improved battery life. Cons: If you can tell the difference between 128kbps and 320kbps recordings, you'll definitely notice this is poor quality. Can't unlock the volume limit due to encryption. Background hiss is a serious blast from the past - didn't we leave this in the 80s? The back is made from a strange, shiny, scratch-attracting magnet. In short: an awesome music player, so long as you're deaf, don't mind poor sound quality, or otherwise don't listen to music. Oh, and Apple's aftercare is very good - it's just a pity the product blows.

absolutely no problems, why has everyone else??
i bought my first ipod in july 2004, 20gb classic, and it was great, no problems with it. just before christmas (2007) it was lasting for around 3 hours, the battery had seen better days, so i started to look at a new ipod. all the bad reviews on here kept putting me off, but i decided to buy one 3 weeks ago, as my other was now down to 2 hours and was definitely needing replaced. i've no idea why i waited, no idea why i took these bad reviews into account, because the 80gb classic is GREAT! i've had it for 2 weeks now, it was updated with songs the first day i got it, took around 20 minutes to get the thousands of songs on it, and since then it's only been updated another once, lasting about 2 minutes. i DIDN'T charge it when i got it, as the battery was full, so the battery has lasted THAT long! i had to charge it last night, as it was down to a red bar, so it wasn't fully dead. i use it for 3/4 hours per day, sometimes longer, so i'm very impressed that i got 2 weeks worth out of one charge. even my other one didn't last that long!! i also like the colour screen, my other doesn't have that. it's crisp and clean and looks a lot better. not had problems with cover flow either, it works fine. also not had any problems with the volume. it's clearly audible on the lowest setting, and on highest i nearly blew my eardrums. also noticed there is a volume limit in the settings, is this maybe why so many people have problems with low volume?!? i'm also not using the apple ipod earphones, i'm using phillips. also liking the case colour. i thought it might have been a 'shiny' case like the psp and ds lite's, but it's nothing like that, it's a 'matt' case. fingerprints don't show up on it, although they obviously do on the back, but this happens with my other ipod, too. easily wiped off though. so yes, all in all, i'm very impressed with my new ipod and kicking myself for taking these bad reviews into account, because for me, they're not justified. it's also well worth the money, my first cost £220 at the time, and it was 20gb.

Superb machine(s)
My last player was a CD Walkman. As it's now 15 years old, and I'm tired of lugging CD's around, I thought it about time for something new. Should I stick with Sony or stick my neck out and crunch on an Apple? Well I bought both...this iPod and also the Sony NWZ-A828K 8gig. My overwhelming opinion is that, first and foremost, they are both incredible machines. Buy either (similar price at Amazon) and you will be thoroughly delighted. The sound and pictures on both are sublime (Apple earphones very average so I use the excellent Sony with both players). I'm looking forward to many years' audiovisual pleasure with these. If I had to choose? The Apple....first and foremost it has ten times the memory....films,telly and music vids are all simple to rip (from my Sony HDD recorder) and load on the Apple, and with so much memory even films hardly register on the guage! I think a 2hr film goes on at 500mb....amazing picures and sound too! ipod user interface is better too, wheel and menus are intuitive and a pleasure to use. iTunes tries to lock you in a little (only 1 PC allowed) but it's slick and speedy to use and synching is rapid. DRM (protected) iTunes (ie most of them) won't play on anything else so if you want to put them on another machine you'll have to burn and rip them. It will play Mp3 and will convert non-DRM WMA tunes.

So far, sooooo good!
Firstly, I can only give durability a 3/5 as I've only had it a day...! (So don't worry about that mark.) The ordering was easy, dispatch was quick and receipt at the sooner end of the expected date range. Packaging was good quality and light - important to us who value the environment. The iPod was exactly as described. Some marks on the polished silver back but that's easy to mark. The front screen had one small mark but nothing has affected the working of the unit. AND MUCH less marked than I would expect for a 10 year old unit. It's a slightly later model than my previous (and sadly lost!) one. Given some negative and slightly misleading feedback, I took extra care to make sure I followed suggestions from other reviewers to turn up the volume capability and this worked perfectly. I also went to the Apple iTunes Help section which I found on the iTunes programme on my laptop. This gives great advice on how to set up and Sync your iPod depending on what model you have. I followed this and the iPod is working like a dream...! GREAT sound quality - though this may have something to do with my Bose QC15 headphones...!! The music is as good as I remember before with great balance tonal quality. The standard iPod USB connector was supplied with the unit and clearly works. One minor suggestion - it would be good to get the 3 pin plug with it to go with the cable. But that may be just me being very old-fashioned...!! A GREAT JOB and A GREAT BIT OF KIT at a REALLY GOOD PRICE...!! Thank you!

Flawed - but fills a gap in the market
I have mixed feelings about the ipod Classic. After almost three years of strictly using Creative MP3 players, I decided to give the ipod a go. The main reason (and I think the main advantage that this ipod has) is that it is impossible to buy a circa 40GB MP3 player for around the £150 mark. The dearth of 40GB players means that this at the very least does fill this niche in the marketplace. Initially I thought that I was going to hate the CoverFlow feature and that it was a bit gimmicky, but now I'm finding that I like it. Likewise, the music quiz game is particularly enjoyable - they've really taken advantage of the fact that you can have a quiz tailored to your personal music taste. My main criticisms of the unit are as follows: - It tends to pick up dust and fingerprints far more easily than previous MP3 players that I've owned. - Playlist creation from the ipod itself is simply appalling. On the Creative players, you can rattle through adding albums or songs onto the currently playing selection and then save as a playlist. On the ipod, you have to listen to an individual song, hold down the centre button for a number of seconds to add it to an 'On-the-go' playlist and then save this playlist under a different name later. Honestly Apple - this problem was solved years ago by other manufacturers. - It tends to forget what is in the current playlist, particularly after going to the music quiz game. Not so convenient for someone like me who likes to add several albums to a playlist to listen to over the course of some weeks. - After manipulating files through Windows Explorer or using Winamp, the internal database seemed to quite easily get out of sync. The effect of this was that when turning on the ipod, it would show 'No music' present. This could be fixed by using Media Monkey to rebuild the internal database (I don't know what the other options are for doing this). - The touch-sensitive scroll wheel is atrocious, it's anyone's guess as to whether it will respond to a touch at all and how sensitive it will be today. I am bemused as to why many MP3-player manufacturers seem to think that a non-tactile user interface is a good idea. Creative actually got this right back in 2001 with the click-wheel on the Zen Nomad, but for some reason it's been downhill ever since. This may be slightly mitigated by the fact that you can get external remote controls that provide a tactile way of controlling the device. - The lack of one of my favourite features from the original Creative Zen Nomad - which is the ability to preview another track whilst retaining your current position in the track and playlist that you are currently listening to. In summary, I think MP3 manufacturers still have a lot to learn. Apple could do a lot worse than looking back at the original Zen Nomad which, although ugly, had a far more useful UI than anything since. The reason I would give the ipod classic 3 points is because ultimately, it meets my need to store and be able to listen to 40GB of music at a competitive price-point.

My most treasured gadget
I've had my iPod Classic for three years now, and it is still my most treasured gadget. In that time phones, waterproof MP3 players and PDAs have come and gone, some faulty and some upgraded; but my trusty iPod is still going strong and still loved as much. In terms of reliability and durability, it has been very well travelled and along the way it has been dropped, kicked, sat on, slept on and even had a baby throw up on it. But not once has it stuttered or failed. I have kept it in a protective case for its whole life, so that may have contributed to its longevity. In terms of storage, it has an 80Gb capacity, but despite having uploaded my lifelong CD collection and have a year's worth of eMusic subscription downloaded to it; I've only taken up 33Gb of space. That's 3734 tracks in 352 albums over 23 genres (15.8 days of music). I also have podcasts, a photo collection and an Audio Book collection on it too; but they appear to be a drop in the ocean on the progress bar of space used. I don't have any TV shows, movies or video CDs though. I suspect having a large collection of these kinds of items might fillup more storage space much quicker. In terms of versatility, well I just love having my entire music collection to hand wherever I am. It connects to: * speakers in my living room and serves as the main music system * an Intempo docking station to provide sounds upstairs * a pillow speaker to guide me off to sleep * USB to provide in-car entertainment * my ears to keep me going at my desk. I have never felt any need to upgrade it when bigger/better iPods came to market, and I don't see any need for a considerable time to come. I love it!

Pienamente soddisfatto
Prodotto di alto livello. Ne avevo gia uno acquistato nel lontano 2001, appena uscito.Usato per 15 anni senza problemi. Purtroppo rubato l'anno passato.
